Pressure point at range with Force Move?

By verdantsf, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Pressure Point: When making a Brawl check against an opponent, instead of dealing damage, may deal equivalent strain plus additional strain equal to ranks in Medicine (this ignores soak).

Force Move, Control Upgrade 3: The character can perform fine manipulation of items, allowing him to do whatever he would normally with his hands via this power at this power's range.

Combining these two, it looks like a force sensitive character would be able to make a pressure point attack at range. What do you all think?

I wouldn't normally allow for people to make brawl attacks directly with the Force, so I'd say no.

Ha. I had the same thought, but such rules interpretations are read by the community at large as munchkinism and rules-lawyering at its finest. You should "not" listen to Episode 4 of the Order 66 Podcast, where I asked the same question and it was met with a generally unfavorable response from the two hosts and the special guest, FFG's Zoƫ Robinson.

They weren't unkind, but did point out that it was generally not acceptable for a couple of reasons. 1, Brawl checks are made with Brawn, and that's weird to combine with Force usage at range. 2, the whole feel of the game is low-Force use. So creating a "Force Grip" by using Pressure Point is not really within the scope of the game as such. I would tend to agree with them.

However, GM Chris did point out, validly, that it's a pretty dedicated build to go at least 45 XP for the Pressure Point talent and then all the way to the bottom of the Move power tree, not to mention the multiple Force points you'll need to roll (necessitating Force Rating 2 to be a really viable means of damage-dealing). Even though this might not be enough of a reason to allow this, it's really up to the GM whether to allow this sort of thing.

To me, it makes sense, but you'd have to change a number of things. First, you'd make a Brawl + Willpower check along with your Move check at Average difficulty + Range difficulty modifiers (+1 for Medium, +2 for Long). Second, I wouldn't allow your Medicine rank to add to damage. Instead, the damage is simply your Willpower Rating + uncancelled success. Other than that, it might be alright.

Ah, good points!

Yeah, there's really nothing in RAW to support using Move this way. And besides, Move is already one of the more potent Force Powers that FFG's released to date (and that includes the two new ones in Age of Rebellion), so it doesn't need the extra layer of cheesiness that allowing it to use Pressure Point (already considered a really good talent by virtue of it bypassing Soak Value) at range would incur.

I suspect we'll see the "deal direct damage via the Force" power in Force & Destiny. In the interim, there's the Injure power that I created for my "Ways of the Force" fan supplement. It pretty much covers both Vader's Force choke and the Emperor's Force lightning.

The "Wound" concept is a very popular one as far I as have been able to tell (since the arrival of the Beta books way back when), and that is also the way I'd go when trying to write up a simile of Force Choke/Grip/Wound/etc. So far I've only given a few NPCs the ability, and it's very basic. I like Dono's take, able to be very broadly applied and yet seems to encapsulate the in-universe lore.
