My Imperial Aces Repaint

By Deltmi, in X-Wing

I took 2 of my Tie Interceptors, and decided to repaint them into the upcoming Imperial Aces expansion.

*Update 9/29: The peg attached to the ERG Tie Interceptor literally split in half during a game. It wasn't bumped, it wasn't dropped, it just split apart by itself. I think it was the brake fluid that probably weakens the plastic peg. Since the peg is so small, I couldn't super glue it back properly, so I ended up super gluing a stand peg right into the "half peg". I will not be using brake fluid in any future repaints.

For the Emperor's Royal Guard: All GW paint

1. Stripped the paint with brake fluid (although something did happen...more on that later),

2. Used Citadel Skull White primer

3. Used Mephiston Red, Abaddon Black for the base color

4. Used Administratum Grey and White Scar for the details

5. Used Nuln Oil for the wash

For the 181st Saber Squadron:

1. Used Nuln Oil for the wash

2. Used red acrylic paint for the bloodstripes

I hand-painted everything because I don't own an airbrush. I'm wondering if it would look "cleaner" if it was airbrushed?

As noted earlier, I soaked the miniature in brake fluid for 20 mins, and then used a toothbrush to remove the paint. I decided to soak it again for another 20 mins because I felt there was still paint that could be removed. Well, on the second scrubbing, the right wing broke clean off. I'm not sure if it was the brake fluid or my scrubbing around that area... Anyway, I super glued it back without any problem, but I glued it back slightly crooked (arg).

I think it is the brake fluid. Same thing happened to my TIE bomber when I stripped it, but superglue fixed it. It must weaken the bond slightly, so disturbing the model by cleaning it can break the join. Only happened on one model though.

Anyway, nice paint jobs. I think the RG interceptor would benefit from edge highlighting on the red. Blood red mixed with a small amount of yellow and white. Run over the raised edges to give a sense of depth.

Thanks for the compliments!

Bump for update

Simple green with a 50/50 SG/water mix works on plastic much better. It takes longer so using a 50/50 mixture and about 4-6 hours works great. I used to leave 40k models in over night. I am not sure about these models so using it on a model that you don't care about or have a lot of would be wise as a test subject first.

I think I'm going to be using simple green in the future. Although my wife might think I'm going to start cleaning if I buy cleaning products...
