Alternative to Tokens

By Thom Servo, in X-Wing

One of the things that makes me a little crazy is having piles of shield tokens on my ships. It just seems like a mess & I always end up knocking them around. OK, maybe I'm a little OCD.

One of the guys I play with uses a D10 to keep track of his shields. Does anyone else have token alternatives they're using?

Have a few blue dice. I suppose you could do a number dial, but Dice work well enough.

Or just put the shield tokens on the bases of the ships during the game.

Er.. I'm not entirely sure I get this... Your clumsy so knock over piles of shields...But, it's just as easy to knock over dice, and when you do you can't just repile them you lose the number on the dice.

...or just put the shield tokens on the card for the specific ship. Tis requires you to use the numbered tokens for the base and keep an additional, identical number on the proper card. No more fuss about which tokens are set for which ship and nothing gets bumped nor interferes with movement.

Why would u place the shields on youre ship in the first place? Put them on youre Pilot cards!

Try blue tacking them to the cards.

Actually it makes it far easier to see at a glance which ships are low on shields if this is reflected on the board (rather than the cards)

Personally I use eldiablito's method, and I believe this is the way FFG intend the game to be played. Some method for displaying shield level near the model itself would be great (someone like Litko really should develop something if FFG aren't planning to develop it themselves)

So let me get this straight. Along with the focus, evade, ion, critical and target lock tokens you place next to your ships, you want to add shield tokens to the mix? Sorry but we already have too many tokens cluttering up the map. Keep the shield tokens on the pilot cards...need to know how many a ship has, ask your opponent.

i agree with zathras23

too much clutter, keep everything on the pilot cards.. the only things that should be on the map are the ships, asteroids and any focus, evade, target lock tokens and any ionized tokens..maybe criticals for reminders but even then it's starting to get pretty cluttered

When I've played, we only put TLs on the board. Everything else sticks by the pilot card.

I don't think it's ever occurred to me to put shield tokens on or near the ships themselves. I have played with plenty of FFG folks, they don't either. Works a lot better on the pilot card, with the upgrades and what not. Target locks, focus, stress and evades I like out there tho. It just seams like shields are part of the damage state tracking, and you don't deal damage cards out on the table, you put them with the pilot cards.

I like the d10 idea a LOT.

a d6 should be fine for all ships atm, more surface area so much harder to knock around.
