Zombies!!!

By SuperKamiGuru24, in Game Masters

Hey everyone I'm looking into trying to run either a single adventure or a full on campaign set in the Zombie apocalypse and would appreciate any help y'all can give.

I figure I will either have their ship crash on the planet (which just so happens to be earth) or have them have to find the MacGuffin. On planet I want it to be dusk/nighttime when they first leave their ship. Have them to walk through an eerily quite playground with children's toys on the ground be their first encounter with the infected.

I'm still relatively new at doing homebrew games. So if anybody has suggestions with stating the infected (I'm toying with the idea of special infected if you have any ideas on them), missions I could give them or just any ideas to help me improve this basic idea I would greatly appreciate it.

I can't stat it out for you offhand, but look up the Blackwing Virus on wookiepedia for a precident in the Star Wars Universe.

It depends on what kind of zombie you're looking at. Speedy zombies would consistently be able to use 2 manuevers per turn, plus an attack. Slow zombies wouldn't.

Either way, they'd be minions, with basic stats (1s) across the board. They'd have talents such as auto-wound recovery, and can only truly be killed by a critical result. (Don't roll the crit, but assume that it takes them down). The group talent would be brawl.

I need to think about this more.

Read Star Wars: Death Troopers. Should be a quick read.

Rackghouls are also an example of the classic zombie trope adapted to Star Wars. I don't know that they've been statted out for EotE anywhere yet, though.

Rakghouls. Bando Gora...

My campaign fairly regularly features both "zombies" (in the form of drug-addled Bando Gora cultists who can spread their condition with a bite) and mummies (Kashi Mer "funeral droids" where there's a basic droid "spine" keeping a decaying body intact --- only way to stop them is to behead them).

I have been running a fantasy mod of EotE and no fantasy game is complete without zombies.

Critical Weakness: Decrease the crit rating of all attacks against this creature by 1 to a minimum of 1.

Blame all typos on my phone (;

Also we were discussing other undead traits here: http://www.d20radio.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=152&t=12231

Rakghouls are pretty much the Star Wars versions of zombies, with a bit of werewolf thrown in for good measure (given the drastic physical transformations that take place).

GM Chris had an early adventure in his Alternate Universe campaign for Saga Edition that took place on a derelict space station orbiting the planet Taris. It was pretty much a zombie scenario in space, and it worked quite well to freak his players out. I ran my own version quite some time ago, and my players were also pretty well freaked out, even though a couple of the characters were noted as "stone-cold badasses" (particularly the Wookiee ex-gladiator).

The infection part of the Rakghouls was kind of tricky to nail down for this system. In looking back at it, it could be construed as a bit clunky, though I wanted to keep it from taking out an unlucky PC under most instances yet have it still be dangerous and something to make the PCs worried about should they face these monsters.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I'm loving the Blacking Virus. My big thing right now is how would I handle the PC's getting infected? I want there to be that chance of them getting infected and losing members but I don't want it to be 1 scratch or bite and their done. Any ideas?

What do you guys think about "Special Infected" kinda like the ones from Left 4 Dead?

I forgot to add my disease quality to my write up!

Disease X: After combat where this creature deals wound damage to a target creature The target must make a Resilience check with a difficulty of X or become infected.

If you are using blackwing zombies as your model i would also recommend using a modified version of scathing tirade to mimic the psychological effect of the screeching on the characters. Although that is probably a simple fear check.

That's not a bad idea. I'm going to get rid of the Blackwing Zombies ability to use Blasters and such. I like the idea of the "Hive-mind" hordes and them learning to avoid traps and open doors, But I don't want this to be a shooting contest.

Do you guys think the Zombies should have Soak? Most Zombies the Blackwing included are fairly resistant to damage other than the head and spine. So if they get into a fight, should I go with less Zombies with soak or more without it?

I think zombies should have decent soak and wound thresholds (if not higher than average), but be vulnerable to critical injuries. This represent them being resilient to physical trauma, but a solid, well-placed hit will take them down.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Thanks for the feedback.

I'd say go with a higher-than-normal Soak Value, but a slightly-lower Wound Threshold to reflect the fact that they're rotting corpses. I'm thinking that a +2 bonus on top of their base Soak Value would be sufficient, and a base Wound Threshold of 8 (assuming a Rival) is good.

If you want the PCs to be able to blaze through them at certain points, simply run them as Minions with half as much a Wound Threshold as the Rival version, and being Minions they are inherently susceptible to critical injuries, which can simply be described as head-shots or the like.
