Ibtisam

By El_Tonio, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I searched through the past two pages and didn't see anything on this (though I'm guessing it must have been discussed before at some point... so sorry if I just missed it).

What's the consensus on Ibtisam's special ability:

Can she use her ability EITHER when attacking or defending, or BOTH when attacking or defending?

If just one or the other, and if she chooses to use it when defending, can she use when defending during a SINGLE attack, or can she use it to defend against ALL attacks directed toward her?

Edited by El_Tonio

Both! The ability triggers "when attacking or defending" is true.

XOR should be included in common English. ;) At least the card does not read "either ... or".

Take away the or and other clause and separate it into two sentences. Or just gets rid of a lot of extraneous words.

When attack, if you have at least 1 stress token, you may reroll 1 of your dice. When defending, if you have at least 1 stress token, you may reroll 1 of your dice.

Agreed with the above. "When attacking or defending..." is the trigger. When someone's firing at you, are you "Attacking or defending"? Sure :) If another ship fires at you, or maybe Ibtisam somehow miraculously dodged a shot and a Gunner takes a second shot, are you "attacking or defending"? Again, yep.

Every attack she makes, every attack made against her, all kicks in.

Yes I agree with the above too. Both.

Now that makes her very useful. I was playing it as either and only once per turn. Billy fish that's better

I agree, in symbolic logic "or" can mean one or the other or both, and I thought that is how it should be take here. But, I was not sure. Definitely makes her a stronger B-Wing pilot this way.

The key is that there's nothing that says she 'spends' the stress token or anything like that. So as long as she hangs onto it she gets the benefits every time it triggers.

Be carfeul with Ibtisam. She cannot reroll that attack die if she is attacking Dark Curse. His ability prevents hers. (just the reroll attack dice part, the reroll defense die still works).

The Attacking or defending 'trigger' part tells you in which step of the attack phase you are to use the ability in; Your modify attack roll OR your modify defense roll. Both happen at different steps in an attack sequence, be it either yours or your opponents. The stress token is the 'stopper' (if she doesn't have a stress token she can't use the ability).

Edit: added defense reroll would still work

Smeh to darkcurse. We'll kill him the old fashioned way. FIX BAYONETS ... I mean with lazers.

The real problem is that to have these rerolls you need stress. Too many Bwing actions cause stress so once stressed you are limited to how you are going to move next turn.
I add PTL to cause chains of movement/actions which end in stress

She's an amazing pilot. Push the limit and evasiveness both work well on her. I don't think I've seen a pilot do more damage.

I did something like.

Ibti

Sensor jammer

PTL

Ion Cannon

Wedge

R2

Biggs

Shield Upgrade

With jammers Ibti lasts so much longer too. Keeps those shields longer too which is v.important. Save the shields for crits

I find the Jammers questionable. Anybody with a focus or Marksmanship ignores it, and anything planning on shooting her will focus. Sure it forces specific actions, but that's of minimal importance given focus is quite often the best option.

Personally I view it as being useful partially because it discourages the enemy keeping the token for their own defense rolls, even if it doesn't lower the amount of damage the b-wing or shuttle is taking. Just because doing a focus means you can ignore it doesn't mean you always will.

My group are arguing over when you apply the card. Is it immediate after role (ie before focus is spent).

If it is after focus spent then it means these focus stackers are good vs jammers. if it is before focus well it encourages them to Firstly not take evades but take focus and to use that focus on shooting at me.

Rulebook page 11: If the attacker and defender both have abilities that can modify attack dice, the defender resolves all of his abilities before the attacker.

Defender modifies hit to eye using jammers. After that the attacker modifies eye to hit using focus.

The Sensor Jammer should be applied during the Defender Dice Modification step. Nothing on the card indicates that it is used outside of the normal dice modification sequence.

Ahh who applies first had never come up before.
Thanks for the reference.

Really helpful being the third person to say that. Thanks *sarcasm*

while not about ibitsam, the sensor jammer can be nice on ten nunb with marksman, especially when fighting enemies with evade. As you force them to evade or get a crit, thus they might not focus. Also if you shoot before they shoot they now have to think harder about using a focus to deny you a hit.

The biggest issue with the sensor jammer is that you only get 1 in the shuttle :D

Amen!

I decided to have Ibti with Advanced Sensors and an Engine Upgrade, as the Adv. Sensors mean I don't lose my action before taking red maneuvers. Also, the Adv. Sens + Boost combo on a B-Wing gives you the only angled kyogran in the game, alongside an astonishing amount of other maneuverable goodness. She dances in and out of firing arcs like it's May Day, and the re-roll on defense keeps her alive for a surprising amount of time.

Of course, running her alongside Garven Dreis and Dutch Vander didn't hurt anything either ;-)
