Deck List to Help Teach the Game

By topazdragon, in Android: Netrunner Deck Building

Does anyone have a deck list (or even just a reccomendation) that they feel would be good to use to teach players the game?

I'm looking to teach some new players and I want them to get the full expirience and show them everything the game has to offer while not overwhelming them.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Both I and my wife learned how to play using the initial deck lists provided in the core set (all the Jinteki and neutral cards from the core set for the corp and all the Shaper and neutral cards from the core set for the runner). I think that's actually a good idea as the Jinteki deck teaches the basics (and importance) of bluffing in the game but there is a danger of the runner flatlining early and not really getting the point (that's what happened the first time I played with my wife). And from personal experience if you don't use the core starter decks don't teach anyone how to play while you're playing the criminal. My wife just stopped playing with me the first time she got hit with three account siphons in a row.

To learn the game, I like to first focus on the mechanics rather than bluffing and the like. Because of that I prefer the starter set HB and the starter set Kate.

Always have the new player be the runner.

Before starting a game, just give the runner a few icebreakers and unlimited cash and health. Set up a few dummy servers, something like:

1. Agenda --> No Ice

2. Agenda (advanced once or twice) --> Ice (something like wall of static or enigma). Run it again with more ice of different types.

3. Trap (Junebug or something advanced once or twice) --> Ice (similar to above)

4. Asset (Pad) --> Ice (something like Neural Katana).

5. Upgrade (SanSan) --> Layers of ice

6. Upgrade (Ash or Red Herrings) + Agenda --> Layers of Ice

Just do this a few times without playing a game to get the new player to understand runs and how to use different types of breakers on different types of ice as well as make them aware of traps, offensive upgrades, and defensive upgrades.

Make sure one of these also uses tracing ice so they get a feel for that. Then take away a crucial breaker (like take away a killer and have them run neural to explain that they take the damage, but still keep going).

Once they have running and using ice breakers down, show them a couple of corp operations (Scorch, Sea Source, etc).

Running is the key to the game and this should be learned first. If you just do this with dummy servers a few times without the pressure of an active match, they will probably learn quicker and you'll probably be a better teacher (because neither are trying to win).

After that play HB v. Kate (maybe get rid of useless things like Netshield and Global Sec and give them something better).

From there on out, definitely go Jinteki v. runner (any faction) and put on the show on running.

A lot of times I also play a teaching game as starter Weyland and try to go for a Posted Bounter --> Scorch --> Scorch (if needed) win to show how a corp can be very deadly on the offense instead of just sitting on defense.
