Played a great game of Talisman last night. I’d finally finished converting all the 2nd and 3rd editon expansions for 4th Revised and it was time for a game at last! So we were playing with the Expansion Set, The Adventure, The Dungeon, Timescape, Master Level Characters, City, Dragons, Cave, Forest, Mountains and the Dragon’s Tower! I’m still yet to convert the Characters though.
As I was playing the Dwarf, I thought I was in for an easy win when I saw my Craft starting to pile up especially when I became the High Mage as well. I got slowed down a bit and by the time I was in the Inner Region the Sheriff Prophetess was on her way in as well. We were playing with the Tower after the Valley of Fire. I raced up the Tower without too much problems but by this time was down to 2 Lives. I got to the Crown of Command, turned my alternative end card over, bugger, it was the Demon Lord! I had Craft 10 compared to its 12 and it had 4 Lives. It batted me once leaving me down to my last Life before I made my escape down to the Plain of Peril.
Well, I thought, I’ve probably blown my chance, the Prophetess had 13 Craft and all her Lives and was now at the Valley of Fire. At least I had plenty of Gold to heal. I drew my next card, Fools Gold! Now I was in trouble, but surely I had enough Strength and Craft to beat anything. Next card, Ghostly Vengeance! (all players who have defeated a Spirit must lose a Life). “***** ***** ***** *****” I cried as I crumpled down to the ground. The Prophetess looked confident despite struggling for 5 turns to lift a Portcullis. The Prophetess now had 14 Craft and was beating the hell out of the Demon Lord. My new Character was the Monk and together with the Wizard we hatched a plan to bring about the downfall of the soon to be victorious Prophetess. So there we were, the Demon Lord down to 1 Life, the Prophetess at 4, it was time to put the plan into action. The Wizard raced into the City, paid his 4 Gold to retrieve Random from the discard pile. This was never going to work was it? There was no way the Prophetess would be that unlucky to roll a 3 was there. Having no Fate left, it was a tense moment as the dice was thrown….. A 3!!!! All her lovely Craft vanished and a cheer went up! But the Prophetess had one more trick up her sleeve. Brainwave (doubled her Craft Value). This gave her one last shot at Craft 10 against the Demon. Luck not on her side the Prophetess made a hasty retreat.
Now it looked like the Wizard had the best hope with a Craft of 10 compared to the ruined Prophetess and a starting Monk. But it was not be! A while later and after several lucky cards, the Monk was now the Templar and could use his Strength instead of his Craft in Psychic Combat (we had removed the Life loss rule). After a quick journey into the Cave to boost his Strength even more (14) it was time to kick some Demon Lord butt! By this time, the Wizard had got himself up to Craft 13 but the Monk was now at the Valley of Fire and the Wizard was just picking the lock on the Portal of Power. “Not so fast” said the Wizard, casting his favourite spell as my girlfriend (how could she do this to me!) watched the smile fade from my face. Debauchery!! (the player must spend each turn moving towards the Tavern and upon arrival miss 3 turns and loose 3 objects, gold ,lives or followers. My chance at victory was gone.
The Wizard battled his way to the top of the Tower where the Demon Lord was waiting. Surely there was no way the Wizard could lose with 14 Craft and 6 Lives. But once again, the gods of Talisman decided it was not to be so. With both the Demon and the Wizard down to their last Life, the Wizard decided that surely she must be victorious. But surprise surprise, the Wizard fell dead to the cobbles.
Recovering from his massive binge, the Monk recovered his wits, marched up the Tower, slew the vile Demon and 6 hours after we started, victory was mine!!
What a game!!!
