Drawing a Blank?

By venkelos, in Only War

Yes, I know that this is cheese, so don't worry, but I am wondering, has anyone else allowed a Guardsman to play as a Null?

Rogue Trader's Navis Primer probably has the best template, overall, but something OW would not be too hard, either. I can see how the template might seem unnecessary; DEs don't have psykers, and Ork Weirdboyz are not necessarily common, but I am still curious, as they are one of my favorite things in 40. I know that the Sisters have a group, and several Blanks have served in the military in Eisenhorn's story, as the Distaff I believe, or with Ciaphus Cain. Certainly, these are exceptions, but their rarity makes them all so. With 6,000 points to spend, it would seem possible to build one, weaker in several ways, but a Blank, nonetheless. So, anyone run with it? I thought of it as a Specialty, but thought it better to be a template for Guardsmen; they have the requisite starting XP, and it fits less with the other Specialists.

I wouldn't make it a specialism; it's not. Certainly not one recognised by the Imperial Guard, anyway.

I haven't used it myself, but would be fine with allowing it as an elite advance - essentially taking all your starting XP for a regimental specialist.

One other comment is that I would say (a) you cannot become a psyker (obviously) but also cannot gain the Fellowship and/or Social aptitudes, and lose them if you would otherwise have them. Blanks are not good people people.

I have never let anyone play as a blank, however they have faced a person who is one because their psyker wouldn't stop killing everything I sent against them. Basically he had to make a willpower save to be able to avoid fleeing the blank's presence and using powers required a -30 Willpower check. I wouldn't let anyone play as one though since against chaos being able to cut off the warp seems a little too overpowered.

Wasn't there a guardsman, Commissar Cain's batman who was a blank, did he stay with the commissar or was he hoovered up by the Blackships?

One of Gaunt's men exhibited psker powers and he was taken, did he return?

I would say it was up to the individual GM, but its not a power to be pushed under the carpet, its a major thing that should be treated as such.

Blanks don't get taken by the black ships, as far as I know, since they're not Psykers.

Ferik Jurgen (Ciaphas Cain's batman, yep) was however in danger of being requisitioned or killed as a mutant by an Inquisitor or similarly powerful individual. He basically never washed, so that everyone would put their unease in his presence down to his stink, though, and I think they were pretty careful not to bring him too close to any psyker (they didn't want to neutralise).

Yes, Gaunt's man (this one I don't remember) did return... As a horribly mistreated psykic weapon. He helped them, but also caused them a lot of problems with the visions and ghosts he conjured, and in the end was mercykilled by the other commissar of the Tanith.

I wouldn't make it a specialism; it's not. Certainly not one recognised by the Imperial Guard, anyway.

This would be my recommendation- and I would also suggest role-playing it as no-one knows the PC is a Null (maybe not even the PC...). The Guard doesn't screen for that, as far as I know, and if the fact did find its way into a soldier's record he would likely be... recruited by a certain organization ( =][= ) that could make use of his particular anti-skill (i.e. 'roll up a new character').
