I just noticed the other day a little flag symbol beside some characters' names (eg Wurrzag). What does this symbol mean?

that the card is unique and can be only one in play.

you'd better check the rulebook one more time

Also, check the FAQ, as some cards that were printed w/out the flag (not unique) have since recieved eratta that now states that they are unique - not too many of these, and no biggy for casual play - but just an FYI.
