Inventive uses of Triumph and Despair

By progressions, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I was watching a Clone Wars episode last night which featured the protagonists and their enemies engaging on a plain with geysers that spewed corrosive acid. The protagonists were able to trick the enemies into getting sprayed with acid a few times, and had to run for cover themselves when one of the geysers went off.

It occurred to me that it could be fun to throw that mechanic into an EOTE game, where the PCs must make periodic checks for the state of the geysers (or maybe upgrade attack rolls or something).

Something so that if a PC gets a Triumph, then perhaps an NPC gets blasted with a geyser and if a PC rolls a Despair, they take the hit.

What do you think?

Any other examples of fun ways to add environmental or circumstantial effects using the narrative dice?

Star Wars stories are full of chases through dangerous territories, like the garbage compactor, the forests of Endor, the space worm in the asteroid, droid factory in the prequels, etc.

I'm looking forward to incorporating some of this into my games.

I will direct you here to another thread in a forum far, far away. GM Jedi-Scoundrel on the d20radio forums collaborated with some folks to put together a set piece document with lots of environmental stuff.

Hope that serves for some inspiration!

That link is awesome thanks man, can't wait to use these on Saturday.

Agreed, that link is pure gold.

I think this game really benefits from examples of what can be done with dice results, and this is a really good one.

Yeah, it just take a few good examples to really get the creative juices flowing, I've noticed. The way this system supports and favors collaboration (both at the table, and on the interwebs) is another point in it's favor.

That link is kriffing awesome. Thanks so much!

I've seen somewhere that after every X amount of Threat is rolled, (from pc or Npc rolls) an effect is triggered, I've used it to great effect for some "randomly" occuring effects.
