Never tell me the odds!

By Alarum, in X-Wing

I was talking with a friend and came up with this for a crew card.

C3PO

When your template or ship overlaps an asteroid, you may discard this card. You do not need to roll an attack dice, lose your action or skip your perform action step. You may still perform an attack.

" Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1! "
" Never tell me the odds. "

What points do you think this would be worth? I was thinking 3 to 4.

Probably more like 1. It's only a one time use and still takes away the action. Not to mention it also takes a crew slot, too. Interesting though. :)

I believe his intent is essentially "You may fly through an asteroid without suffering any ill-effects". Either way I'd still say 1 point.

Leave it to C-3PO to be a droid that takes up a crew upgrade slot... :)

Wow 3 or 4 points would make it one of the more expensive upgrades, and for an effect that is a one shot deal, and only prevents 1 possible damage (you may not even take damage from the asteroid if you rolled anyway) is a bit much. Keep in mind Push the Limit is only 3 points, and that's a permanent ability... 1 at most, maybe 2 if it was changed to "no effects from asteroids" for one turn.

This is fun, for that cost say it is in play for the entire game...

:)

1 point is good. Puts it on par with Adrenaline Rush. Both of which allow you to discard the card to avoid some kind of penalty.

This is a fantastic idea. Very cleavor. It would be the right use of C3PO.

Since you only get to use it once, it is situational, and takes up a crew slot. I would say 2 points. Mostly I am comparing it to Adrenaline Rush (which isn't a crew card but has similar mechanics).

Flavorwise I'd almost like to have something more like "You may ignore the affects of asteroids, reroll one critical hit dice every time you attack." Cost 3.

Specifically because 3-PO should be annoying and never go away.

But the card as you've designed it would be 1 cost.

Make it 1pt crew slot. Instead of avoiding it completely you get to roll twice to see if you avoid. Then it's permanant.

What if you could launch C3PO from your primary weapon arc into an asteroid to have that asteroid move 1 directly away from the firing ship? Or you could jettison C3PO as a counter-measure against missiles and torpedoes, sort of a shiny, annoying flare. Or, if you get an Ion Token then C3PO could absorb the Ion damage and melt into a pile of slag while everyone laughs.

Maybe make C3-PO a free crew slot as long as Chewie is a Crew onboard, he is used to carrying that droid around and can easily disassemble/reassemble him as required.

I intended it to ignore all effects of hitting or manoeuvring over an asteroid. I think the ability, even if only once per game is more powerful than appears at first glance. I think I will go with 2 points because you lose a crew slot as well. Thanks guys .

Is there no existing C-3PO card?

My friends and I were joking about possibilities for him last time we played. My idea was that he cost negative squad points because all he does it give your pilot stress tokens. ;P

He really does deserve a card though, and I love 'im, so I hope it has some use.

I like my Leia idea. It is a sound chip card that just complains at you the entire game.

CP30 Named crew card, Rebel only

I think it could have two effects:

1) Adds an R2 slot to the ship.

2) Roll a defence die every time your ship or template touches an obstacle. On a [focus], you ignore any effect from the obstacle.

The first rule represents a protocol droid's ability to communicate with R2 units. After all, R2D2 repairs the Falcon at a critical point in ESB, and does so on the Queen's ship in the film-we-do-not-speak-of. The falcon with the R2D2 upgrade would be very tough, probably more than is reflected in the card's cost, so would need to be reflected in the CP30 cost.

Since the C3PO cost would be high, I would expect the other ability to be semi-permanent rather than a one off. Ignoring all asteroids is too powerful, and C3PO's griping isn't something the pilot would welcome or plan for, so it is semi-random.

Cost ~5 points, or only ~4 points if you limit it to an R2 slot.

Anyone else reckon that C3PO and Leia will be crew cards that come with the Tantive IV? (Assuming that the bigger starships will still have crew cards in a similar fashion?)

I believe this would be a safe assumption. We currently have Luke, Chewy and Darth crew. Would love to see Emperor, Obi-Won, Leia, and C-3PO just to name a few.

Maybe they are saving those for the epic story gameplay or whatever it's called?

So, you're already half way there.
