Played the orginal; will I like the new one?

By playhavock, in Talisman

I dont want to spend 70 bucks on this game if I will not like it. Its hard to really "tell" I played the orginal and I liked getting to the center, I've been told this aspect is now gone... should I save my money and go ebaying for the orginal ? thanks

Original as in 1st/2nd ed? I'll always remain a fan of the 2nd ed and if I had that, wouldn't be here. 2nd ed base + expansion + Adventure expansion is the combo I played Talisman for years and it was all I needed. Enough characters to make games seem fresh even after 10 years of playing. Alternate endinds (Horrible Black Void cool.gif ) added another element. Personally that above combo is unbeatable as far as Talisman goes. But it might set you back more than 70 bucks.

Also, getting to the center aspect is gone? Crown of Command is at the middle of the board, if you want to win, you need to get there. Okay, there are some funky possibilities that don't require you to go there (char with 1 Life left makes it to the Crown, casts Command spell and it gets Reflected), but CoC is still where it's at.

Hi Playhavock,

You must still go to the center, so i don't see the difference....

If you like the second edition, you will like this one too i think

Only the third edition has a different ending, but that is not really your question... gran_risa.gif Best ending part gran_risa.gif

thanks

I'm not the biggest Talisman fan in the world, but I do enjoy the game. I've played 2nd ed and 4th ed and to me they seem basically the same. 2nd ed had some crazy expansions involved that changed the nature of the game, but if you liked those it would seem FFG is promptly cranking out those as well (and some more of their own to boot), so it's all good.

I'm sure if I sat down and compared components side-by-side I wold realize there are some differences, but overall impression is they're the same game. Same feel at any rate. I'm not disappointed. :)

As further expansions are released for 4th edition I expect it to take over from 2nd as the most popular version. However, the change of artwork somehow has changed the feel of the game for me even though the mechanics are almost identical (Fate being the biggest change). I hope that the best elements of the 2nd edition expansions will be revived along with entirely new ideas. Overall, I am very impressed by the new edition and was delighted to see the reappearance of old favourites in the Reaper expansion. Similarly, it is clear from the previews that many of the original Dungeon cards are being revived. The new board for the Dungeon expansion is superior in every way.

The Inner Region I feel needs the most work - it is too easy (at least for the powerful characters which I and my fellow players like to build) and the same every game. As some amateur expansions have done, and to some extent the 2nd edition Adventure expansion, tougher alternative Inner Region encounters and endings would improve the game and also justify spending many turns in the other regions accumulating large amounts of strength, craft, objects, followers etc (which to me is where much of the fun of the game lies).

The Inner Region needs a Dragon Tower, and then there are a lot of more challenges gran_risa.gif

Or at least different ending cards gui%C3%B1o.gif
