Is it possible to attack a foe past the max range listed on a weapon? For example, blaster pistols are listed at medium range. Can I take a shot at long range with some negative modifiers?
Ranged weapons, beyond max range
Not unless you've got the Sniper Shot talent.
Thanks!
Not per RAW, however you can house rule it if you want. Upgrading difficulty by one (which I would use since that allows foe Despair) or adding one or more setback dice
Without wanting to hijack the thread, but if max range is Extreme.... how far is that exactly?
Is extreme range simply 2 maneuvers past Long range, or is extreme range any range beyond Long?
It's not totally clear but either Sniper rifles have terrible range or they have infinity range. Either way, it sounds silly.
Any ideas?
Extreme range is as far as you need it to be. That's the beauty of this system.

Winner!

Well, up until you get to ya know... Short Planetary Range.
I would add one difficulty dice for shooting beyond range and in addition one difficulty dice and one setback dice for each range beyond the weapon's maximum. No upgrading since I would not like to see any Despair result just because some shots beyond the max range.

So in your house rule, how would you handle the Sniper Shot Talent? Simply allow one step increase free of difficulty mods?
I like the idea that (Like in the old D6 version) beams loose their cohesion and dissipate beyond the listed range.
It made my group run from cover to cover to get their attackers into range. The only person with a rifle, was providing covering fire for the group. Very exciting!

That's a good way to explain it. Plus, I do like the urgency it gives for people to move into range. It also helps to differentiate the snipers from the rest of the pack even more.

The author of this house rule is another person.
No changes to the talent....at least for me:). With this talent you have no additional difficult die and setback dice.

If you really wanted to do it, I would upgrade 1 difficulty die for each range band beyond its max. The reason is you are pushing the weapon beyond what it's suppose to do, maybe even overcharging the weapon to get it to shoot further. It makes sense, to me, that despair should happen if you are shooting beyond max range. If you want to be nice about it, just say any despair = out of energy because you used it up by firing beyond max range.
And yes if you had the Sniper talent the weapons max range is increased by 1 range band before this house rule goes in to effect.
Edited by archon007Just to clarify for those who might misread the difficulty when using sniper shot, you increase the difficult of the shot to that of the difficulty due to range plus an additional dice for each increase on top of that. With 2 ranks of sniper shot firing with a blaster pistol ar the following difficulties
Short range 1 difficulty
Medium range 2 difficulty
Long range 4 difficulty
Extreme range 6 difficulty
Long and extreme require the maneuver to prepare. Using a rifle would be 1/2/3/5 difficulty accordingly.
This doesn't make sense to me. Isn't shooting beyond range and beyond the weapons maximum range the same thing? Also, increasing difficulty for shooting beyond weapons max range is a double hit because the range increase is adding a difficulty die too.

Bad wording, of course it is
. I can agree for an upgrade, but I don't like idea that I run out of energy because I shot out of range. I am not pushing my weapon, simply aiming at the longer distance. Rather character should hit something that will cause him troubles....like police speeder, innocent, something connected with the terrain/area.
If you want to add a house rule then I would say you have to make it more difficult to hit than it wouldbe with sniper shot so a blaster pistol at long range would at least be 5 or more difficulty possibly also upgraded once as you are trying to make the weapon do something that it wasnt meant to do(going to 120% as it were) with despair or 3 threat causing the power pack to explode.
