RIW Tournament Report

By Johdo, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I'm not sure how many tourney's this place has had, but it was my first. Before i try to remember it all, i just wanna thank everyone who came out. I had a great time.

First, my list.

Howlrunner /w Swarm Tactics

Dark Curse

Backstabber

Scimitar Squadron /w Proton Torps and Concussion Missiles

Academy Pilot x 2

100 points

Match 1.

I went up against a 3 TIE / 2 Bomber squad. I don't remember all the TIE's, but they had Howlrunner, and Capt Jonus. Missiles and Bombs to boot.

I win initiative and set up on the left side, and race down hoping to maybe come in from the side or the rear. He flew his squad in a nice tight formation slow and steady. Some bad moves on my end (like kept running my bomber into my TIEs to prevent TL's from acquiring), and some terrible dice rolling cost me this match big time. I did well to just get his Howlrunner off the map before time ran out.

I don't blame the dice on this match so much so as my poor flying and never really getting Howlrunner the ability to do what they do best.

0-1

Match 2.

This match was against Bounty Hunter all turtled up teamed up with Turr Phennir and Mauler Mithil

I win initiative and set up on the right side, was able to get a TL this time. Some bad flying on his side and Mauler blew up due to asteroids. I had Turr on the ropes while the bounty hunter started picking away at my TIE's. Again, some poor flying here and i wasn't able to get both of the bomber's ordinance off. The dice started taking a turn for the worse for him, and better for me. Once i dispatch of Turr, i chased bounty hunter around the map until he was defeated.

This match i think the asteroid placement contributed in the early on, then near the middle and going to the end, he couldn't roll anything that wasn't a blank.

1-1

Match 3.

This match was against Dutch /w R5-K6 + Ion, Kyle in the Moldy Crow /w Recon Spec.+ Ion, and Wedge /w R2-F2 and Marksmanship.

I win initiative and set up again on the left and muscle forward. His crew cuts through the middle, and the scrum started earlier then the previous matches. A few nice Ionized TIE's kept crashing into each other along with some asteroids. I focused on Kyle to stop the spread of Focus. From there Wedge joined the fun. A well placed ordinance from the bomber, and Dutch wasn't long for the world. At this point it was a race to see if his X could be defeated before he picked off my remaining TIE's, and i can say that Wedge is no longer with us.

If Wedge could have got into the scrum a lot sooner, i think this match would have gone much differently. All that focus and being ionized, and Wedge would have been shooting fish in a pond.

2-1

Match 4. (Top 4 pairing, i'm 4th seed)

This match was against 3 Blue Squadrons /w Fire Control systems and Biggs with a Stealth Device

I win initiative and set up on the left, but due to some asteroids i spread some of my TIE's a little thin. He maintained perfect formation until the scrum started. Another bad move with the bomber, and the ordinance sat waiting in the tubes. Another bad turn, and i was staring down the 3 B-Wings with Biggs hiding behind them. I somehow only managed to lose Howlrunner in the exchange. He makes a critical error in his maneuvering and goes 1 whole pass without a shot. My TIE's play catch-up, and once Biggs is finally able to digest some Ordinance goodness from the Bomber, the B's shortly come after.

I don't think i should have won this match. His maneuvering was far better then my own, and he was getting the good dice rolls early in the match. Once he lost that round of shooting, i was able to get Biggs out of the way so i could focus on the B-wings.

3-1

Match 5. (Finals)

This match was against Han Shoots First using Marksmanship /w Engine Upgrade along with 2 Prototype pilots with missiles.

I win initiative and set up along the left side (seemed to work up to this point). He raced forward quickly with the A's and Han. On the 2nd turn, my Bomber was able to get in range, TL, and one-shot an A-Wing with a Missile. Han moves in close, and starts picking at my TIE's. Some semi-crafty maneuvering and i was able to get back into the mix, but not before his other A-Wing one-shotted my Howlrunner with their Missile. I make quick work of that A so i can focus all my fire on Han. Having engine upgrade on the YT proved to be effective through the chase until he got close to the edge. i was able to focus the attack, the bomber got off the other ordinance almost removing all shields. From there, i lost 2 more TIE before Han succumb to the Empire.

This match didn't go nearly as i expected. One-shotting the A-Wing helped tremendously, and the other Torp getting most of Han's shields off helped big time too. Boost on the YT kept him out of a lot of trouble. Some decent rolling on my end saved me from Han one-shotting my TIE's as they moved in for the kill.

4-1

I definitely need to get better with the bomber. Losing all of those opportunities to get missiles off with the bomber should have cost me much more than it did. Proton Torps from range 3 proved to be pretty effective...when i could launch them.

All in all, it was a good day for the Empire.

Good to see that order prevailed! Seems like you had the opposite experience I did, where after that first match almost all but one missile was useless, even though I shot them all and got Jonus' re-rolls, so I'm doubting whether I'll get much use of the bombers. Look forward to playing again sometime!

My squad was Jonus + PTL and a homing missile, Scimitar Squadron with an assault missile and proton bomb, Howlrunner with swarm tactics, and 2 academy ties. It was my first chance to try out the wave 3 stuff and I was really eager to try out the bombers.

My second match was against 2 a-wings with some missiles and Han + Chewie and marksman in the Falcon. Since he placed last I gambled that he'd run them somewhat close but he put Han at the other end of the map which left him out of the action for 3 turns, and he didn't even take a direct route. I wanted to kill Han first but I'd have left myself open if I tried to make it to him across the whole map and ignored the a-wings. I thought I could take out the a-wings before he got close and set up my whole squadron firing on them once, and then most of the squad a second time when none of the a-wings could shoot back. Even with focuses all around, Howlrunner, and Jonus helping the reroll with the assault missile go to three hits I managed to only take off 2 shields? By that time Han got in range and started tearingg things up. Maybe I should have just aborted on the a-wings after the first pass, but attacking them when they couldn't even shoot back was too tempting. In the end they didn't get their missiles off, but I didn't get to use my bomb either because I thought it detonated after *my* activation and passed up the opportunity to use it. 2 attack dice on those ships wasn't enough to do anything even though I managed to deny his action a few times and I lost.

In the third match I went against Khyros with 4 x-wings, Biggs, Wedge + PTL and an R2, and 2 Rookies. They came down in a nice pincer, named pilots from the middle and the rookies down the side straight at my Tie formation. I banked in and managed to take out Biggs before he shot I think, and did a little damage to Wedge, but my assault missile at the rookies totally whiffed even with Jonus. I lost Howlrunner around this point, which hurt. Next turn I dropped the bomb and managed to take out Wedge, although I forgot about one of my Ties who was close and was finished off by the rookies. After the initial pass he predicted my maneuvers exactly and the rookies tore up my squad as I tried to regroup, although there was a bit of a comic chase with my lone scimitar pilot flying all around the map pursued by the rookies, one of which might have had 1 hp, but he kept on my tail so I couldn't get a position to fire or do a k-turn that wouldn't have stripped all my defenses.

A-wings with torps? I thought they could only load missiles. Am I missing something here?

Great bat rep though! Thanks for posting!

You are right. My apologies! I need to take better notes when i participate in these things. Trying to do it from memory after playing for 7 hours just doesn't cut it.

No need to apologize. Remembering the details from that many games is not an easy task.
