Asteroids For X-Wing

By Overmanwarrior, in X-Wing

I have seen asteroid extras for sale to use with X-Wing at gaming stores for about $35, but haven't seen any that quite did the trick for me yet. So I found these at a pet store intended for aquariums. They were perfect.

They came out better than I thought they would. Now I just need to make a few more and get them on the mat.

After getting the HWK-290 last week, it put me into overdrive wanting to get the most out of this game. I didn't want asteroids that would topple over too easily. I wanted them to resembled the actual game pieces that come with the core set, so the same rules and space on a mat would apply. These are very stable. They won't fall over if your arm bumps them while moving ships around.

I looked at landscaping stores, home repair stores, but never expected to find what I needed at a pet store. But, that's where they came from, and thought I'd put them up here. I'm sure I'm not the only one to want something like this.

Great find! I find some of my best terrain pieces in the oddest stores.. I might swing into the local pet store here to see if they have anything close that i could use.

I just paint lava rocks and stick them on flight bases.

To be true to tESB, one of them should be a potato.

Or be inspired by Return of the Jedi and have your Rebel fleet include a tennis shoe :)

They look great no doubt but don't they get in the way? Looks very difficult to check for overlap since the rocks hang over the asteroid templates.

Actually, the asteroid that tumbles past the screen right before Han Solo dives toward the huge asteroid is a tennis shoe. ;)

They hang over about the way the Falcon does, and it depends on the angle. But they are surprisingly easy to work with.

I didn't know that. I may have heard that somewhere before, but that is funny. :)

There are also yogurt containers flying around in Return of the Jedi. Let's hear it for practical effects!!

I would get some mounting board, cut out a shape roughly similar to the Asteroids (maybe print out some space texture and glue it to the top) and then sit the Asteroid model on top. If you need to check anything just pick up the Asteroid model and you have a nice template underneath with a strong edge you can measure game effects over.

Im gonna drill a hole in my astroid tokens and have them just above the astroides bases.

That is definitely a solution, thought I think the OP's ones may be a touch too big for that.
