Random newbie questions

By Terra Branford, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I had kind of a random question that seemed worth putting here, and might have some more come up in a game I will hopefully be running soon.

Say you have a situation wherein hordes of hostile aliens are streaming in through open bulkhead doors. Assuming you don't have someone slicing the controls to get the door closed, and instead a Force-sensitive Exile is using the Move power to force the doors closed while her companions hold off the aliens, how would you rule that? Specifically, the forcing the doors closed, if they're fairly large.

Thanks!

I'll do it quite simply, first by doing cinematic. I wouldn't bring them to their deathes in most cases but I would get the aliens really close to them before the door actually opens. If not just use a Destiny Point when using the power, the door has somekind of failure that makes it easier to open.

Then again, i'm used to playing in quite challenging scenarios. As so, if my mind would be put to it I would probably let them die if they didn't manage to get the right dice throws.

And if you are looking for a way to deal with the rules, in that regards this is how i would do it.

I would put on several throws on the force power move. Each one of them weakening the structure. More throws needed the larger the door is.

If an exeptionnal throw is made (triumph or anything) the door opens instantly.

I want them to close the door to stem the flow of alien attackers, but it's the same general principle. I'm guessing they'd probably need to be able to affect Silhouette 2 to force the doors in this case, but thanks for the input. Good ideas!

That depends… if they are a fairly experienced group then I would go by the book.

Other options would be to make “closed” the default position and had someone (anyone) shoot the control (the hack terminal). Perhaps a destiny point use would have been called for. There are an infinite number of possibilities, you just have to pick one and go with it. You did! It’s all good.

Personally, there is no way a force user could have done that unless they were very high level. Assuming just the basics…

At least one in magnitude, to be able to move more then one object (2 doors).

3, at least, in strength to move the doors due to size (you weren’t descriptive here, so I’m imagining garage doors, hanger doors would be more).

I say strength 4 because the doors are mechanically locked in place (otherwise a computer wouldn’t move them), so one has to overcome the hydraulics as well, bending metal against it's will takes some doing.

A force rating able to compensate for all that.

Not that the cinematics don’t work for it, but I would make sure the players knew this was a GM gimmie, and not the norm, or you get players with a false idea of their characters abilities. The next thing you know the player is trying something equally taxing, expecting it to work the same, and you say “no”. “I closed the doors, why can’t I lift the x-wing?”. Truthfully they require almost the same amount of oomph.

Please don't take this wrong. You asked what I would do, and that's it. I think the whole idea is great, just beyond the capabilities of most player characters. Live and learn! :)

Hope it helps.
