Storage with wave 3. Fleet Getting Larger

By Bolder, in X-Wing

Hello,

Any recommendations, on storage? I've been using this:

http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Molding-5231-Double-Organizer/dp/B000HJ9514/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1379800505&sr=8-3&keywords=plano

and with wave 3 and various other things I'm looking for better storage. As of right now I own 24 regular size ships (though the b-wing and bomber are borderline large ships) plus 1 of each "Large ship", the firespray, falcon and lambda. I was thinking buying another of the linked cased above and using one for each faction, but I never liked how the falcon fit in it.

So if anyone has any ideas or recomendations please let me know. I'd prefer the tackle box style kind over the foam specialty cases. The gaming cases seem to be too limited in expandabiltiy for future models.

Thanks

I use four Plano storage trays for mine, kept in a cheap duffel bag from Walmart. I have one tray for the maneuver templates, tokens and dice, one for each faction, and one for the upgrade cards.

I have four of each of the Wave 1 & 2 Rebel fighters and two falcons that fit nicely in the Rebel tray. There is a bit of room left over but I'm not sure I'll be able to fit four B-Wings and two HWKs in there with their dials and bases.

For the Imperials, I have 6 TIEs, 5 Interceptors, two Advanced and two Firesprays. I just got a Lambda shuttle which I was surprised to find actually fits in the tray. I thought it would be too tall, even on its side with the wings folded. Its close, but it fits. I still have a compartment open for the bombers, so they should all fit.

The four of them fit nicely in the duffel bag, along with two binders I have the rulebooks in, a folded felt mat and a small box with the asteroids I made from lava rocks. Haven't figured out a way to fit the GF9 playmat in there yet.

This is what i personally use. http://www.saboldesigns.net/motorpool.html The motorpool itself will hold quite a bit of ships if you plan out your trays right. The pluck foam allows me to customize the space as i want to for the ships in addition to pilot cards and other things. Most of my focus/evade/TL/ID tokens i keep in a smaller plastic organizer.

Currently the only issue i'm having ship-wise is with the Lambda shuttle, but even that's not all that problematic at the moment. Everything else is fitting no issues.

I use the Battlefoam kit for combined Imp/Rebel fleet. In the ship tray I have 30 small ships and 3 large ships. I removed the components tray and am replacing that with a custom cut BF tray for wave 3 that will hold 10 small ships and 3 large ships. All components pieces moved to a tackle organizer.

Based on the recommendations of several of our podcast listeners, I just picked up the Plano 732 yesterday. They don't seem to have it on Amazon (they have the 728 and the 767), but you can easily find it at Wal-Mart for about $35. It comes with five trays—three larger ones and two smaller ones.

Of the three larger trays it includes, I was able to easily fit two YT-1300's, two Firesprays, one Lambda shuttle, the HWK-290, two B-Wings, two A-Wings, three X-Wings, two Y-Wings, three Interceptors, six TIE's, one Bomber, and one Advanced. All that in only two of the three trays, and I still had room left in those two trays. And that also includes the stands and maneuver dials.

The tokens and templates all fit in one of the two smaller trays, leaving one untouched.

It also includes two compartments on the lid, plus one large area under the lid.

I don't have the largest collection in the world, but it's decent sized, and there's still plenty of room for me to grow. I highly recommend at least considering the Plano 732.

Battle Foam is great, and it's what I've been using until now, but it was never quite able to hold everything, and now with Wave 3, I'm not paying all that money to upgrade.

EDIT: The 767 is close to the 732, and this link will at least give you an idea of what it looks like and how it's set up — http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Molding-Company-Angled-Stowaway/dp/B006UTVKWW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1379809164&sr=8-2&keywords=plano+732

I bought this two days ago

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Fishing/TackleBoxesFishingLine/PRDOVR~0781266P/Plano+Soft+Four+Stow+Tackle+Bag.jsp?locale=en

Comes with 4 locking trays with adjustable sections. One tray fits all my templates and tokens, another two are for rebel and imperial ships and the last one still unused. Not sure if it can fit bigger ships. Maybe Falcon and Slave1 without the "flight pegs". Not sure if Lambda would fit since there is no way to have it more "flat" so to speak.

Bag is very nice too.

Just curious, but are the miniatures holding up in those plastic boxes? I'm not too worried but I'd have thought that the majority would go for some kind of foam. Still it seems that most people are using the Plano or other similar plastic containers. I'm curious as I have long looked at the KR foams but as stated, when you need to upgrade it can be costly. So just wondered how the ships are holding up :)

I picked up the Husky box and just put a few layers of pluck foam in the bottom. It works really great and the ships seem to be better protected from getting banged up.

New to the game but I picked up the Plano 728. I'm a casual player and have brought 2 of everything except the larger ships (1 of each) and wave 1 (extinct at fair prices). Considered the 732 but went with the 728.

Little comparison: The Plano 728 has a rack for 3 - 3650 boxes plus 2 side compartments, 2 smaller up top, and some nice storage under the lid. In comparison, the 732 has a rack for 3 of the larger 3750 boxes plus 2 - 3650 boxes in the side compartments and top/underlid storage.

(3650 = 11" x 7.25" x 1.75" and 3750 = 14" x 9.13" x 2")

Each faction has their own box and the 3rd holds the tokens, cards etc. Top compartments hold the dials. Under the lid are the templates, rulebook and an extra (4th) 3650 box (not included and empty). Plus a 3'x3' felt mat in one of the side compartments (folded).

As a casual player the smaller 728 was perfect with space to grow. The only issue I had with the 732 was sheer size. Didn't want to lug it around less than half full. As was mentioned though, it should definitely be considered, especially if you have a large collection. The larger 3750 boxes in the 732 should fit at least 2 of the larger ships each.

I've only had mine a few days, but I shook mine around a bit to determine how things would shift around and if it was likely to cause any damage. So far, I'm very comfortable with it. Everyone I've spoken to who has one says they hold up well.

True. The 732 isn't as convenient to lug around. However, it's great for "storing" things. If you go to a tournament or something, you're probably just going to take the squad you're playing with. You could put them in one of the smaller trays and just take that.

I've been hauling mine around in the Plano trays for six months now, and have had absolutely no problems with damage. I do make sure the compartments are the minimum size for the ships, both to maximize the number of compartments I can squeeze in and minimize the room they have to shift around, but the models aren't so fragile that a little sliding around during transport hurts them. I keep four X-Wings in one small compartment with no issues at all, even with those tiny laser cannons. I stand them on their engines and kind of interlace them together, but they stay put pretty well.

I use this, and can store all of wave 3 with absolutely zero issues

Funny, I was about to post the same thing. I bought a husky toolbox as well but went with the other model that does not have compartments in the bottom section and that bottom section is also deeper. With it, I can easily store all my wave 1 and 2 with the inserts that came with the ship themselves. I could easily out 3 rows of ship on the bottom section, possibly even without trimming the ship default inserts.

I posted some pictures on boardgamegeeks if you want to see what it looks like for now: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/1781049/star-wars-x-wing-miniatures-game
