I was basically looking at something similar last night... just using Royal Ties and both with stealth but going down to Mauler with Swarm and an alpha. Allows you to get a PS 1 blocker, a bit more initiative overall since Mauler has the same firepower and lets one other go even sooner. Stil have 10pts so each can also take an elite or a sheild or even both or upgrade. Example:
Royal tie + Stealth+Title + Sheild+ PTL 31
Kir + Stealth +Title + Shield 30
Mauler + Swarm 19
Alpha Squad 18
Hurts more when you lose a single ship. Up survival. Let's you play some games. Lots of options.
To the OP:
The squad has a lot going for it. TIE/In are very maneuverable, have good firepower, have OK defenses (3 Ag, Stealth, 3 Hull), and your PS will be quite high.
However, you have very little staying power. You will struggle against high-accuracy lists, specifically Han Shoots First lists. Han with gunner and Marksmanship will have an excellent chance of taking out one of these every round when combined with follow up shots from his escorts. You will struggle to kill him fast enough to preserve your list into the late game. However, once you get there your high-PS and maneuverability may allow you to overcome the odds.
You will also find trouble flying against TIE swarms. They fire enough shots, that they will focus on one ship, run it out of defensive tokens (especially if you used your focus for offense), and power damage through. Combined with action denial as they block all of your lanes, they could be a tough matchup.
So, although your list does not have any major weaknesses, its worst matchups happen to be the two archetypes that are most common in today's meta. Perhaps if things change a bit with the introduction of Wave 3, this list might move into the upper tiers.
Edited by KineticOperatorThat's kind the way I felt about the Interceptor based lists right now... they are soooo good when they are good but those are 2 nearly impossible battles and they are very prevelent right now.
This list was the first squad I played when wave 2 came out and it performed very well. The problem I ran into was 3 out of 4 games the squad did great and I only lost one ship. The fourth game I got killed and barely managed to kill anything. The squad just doesn't have the health or firepower to survive some unlucky dice or mistakes.
I ran a Saber Squadron build tonight (4x Saber w/ PTL and 1 with a shield) against a classic Han Shoots First with Ten Numb behind him, and I ate the falcon in virtually one round of combat. I tore through all 5 shields and 5 of it's hull with my opening salvo (he managed to not kill a tie with Han and I outmaneuvered Ten, so I had all 4 when the shooting started on my end) and then blocked Han's action the next round and still had 3 Int's to finish off the falcon. It was surprisingly easy.
I would probably run a Royal Interceptor squad, trading the single shield for the PS6 across the board, and love it. PTL on interceptors is SO devestating
I do like my interceptors
Try
Saber PTL x3
BSP with DTF
Academy x1
The list is more interceptor based (but very close to what I ran at gencon) and has performed wonderfully, learning to fly it correctly is important since it is meant to shoot from a distance not up close.
It also gives you 4 PS 4 and 1 ps 1, so you have a blocker for init and draw their fire for those nasty crits that can leak through.
