Jan Ors + Nien Nunb question

By Ian Strife, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi everyone, just picked up my wave 3 stuff and i was looking for some interesting squad interactions, one of which i found invovle Jan and Nien Nunb. (Wedge was there too, don't ask.) The thing I was wanting to be sure on was If Nien Nunb's ability may override the Hwks 290's forward 4 red condition and make it a green maneuver... or if the 2 conditions would conflict upon each other and bring about the end of the world.

I think that the red maneuever would become a green one because of this but I just wanted to make sure. I ask only because the friend I regularly play with is a stickler for rules and wants to see it set in stone and triple signed with a notary. Thank you all for your time and happy gaming.

the card is pretty clear, "You may treat all straight maneuvers are green" so all straight maneuvers are green

It is so. It was actually carved in the stone tablets as the 11th Commandment, but got edited out before Moses or whoever came down the mountain ;-)

If there was another card or effect in play (from critical damage say) that made Jan's straight maneuvers red then this would override Nien. Otherwise Nien's affect applies and in this case makes the Straight 4 a green maneuver.

Agreed with all the above. A lot of people take the "if two effects conflict, the worse wins" to mean that red always wins, but that's not the case. Nien is an effect; the color of the 4 ahead is inherent, so there's no conflict, and Nien says "Hit it!"

I don't know if you need more votes, but yes - this is precisely the kind of thing Numb is meant to do, unless (as was said) overridden by a critical damage or something.

Nien is just a Speed Freak.

"We are the knight who say: Ni(en)!!"

alrighty then guys, thank you for your answers and hopefully all of the overwhelming responses will be more than enough to please my friend when it comes down a rule nazi issue.

If it will help any, there's even an FAQ ruling that if you have an R2 unit and are IONIZED, that will actually clear a stress token off of you, because even the 1-speed forward you are arbitrarily assigned when you get zapped is a forward maneuver . That one raised a few eyebrows, but so has it been written.

And I would point out that if an R2 (treat all 1-2 speed maneuvers) is enough to modify the effect of being ionized (you still get a 1-straight, but it's green) that there is no reason Nien wouldn't as well. Say you have Nien on a HWK and get Ionized (same on the Falcon but it would take 2 ion tokens), and you're Jan and just gave someone an attack die the round before and took a stress token.

You get the 1-straight white maneuver, but then Nien changes it to a green, and you clear the stress token off of her. Pretty clear in the FAQ and no reason for your friend to be able to argue that it can override special text like Ion, but not the maneuver dial itself.
