Healing critical injuries

Critical injuries

Is it presumed that if you pass the medicine (or mechanics) check against the difficulty of the severity of the wound, any permanent effects of that critical are mitigated/healed?

Does it work the same for droid and organic PCs? I can imagine it being easier to find replacement visual sensors for droids than finding cybernetic eyes, and probably cheaper too. Does a critical hit which blinds the character damage the eyes temporarily (until healed), but not so serious as to put both eyeballs on the floor, so that a couple of eyedrops and a bandage later (along with a successful check) the character can see again?

Example: A droid PC gets 118 critical hit roll and is therefore blinded. This was the result of being fired upon by a vehicle mounted autoblaster. His Wookiee owner/mechanic tries to restore the droids sight and needs to make a hard check (PPP), the severity of the injury. If he is successful, the critical injury is removed and the droids vision is (easily) restored.

If the Wookiee had access to replacement parts (a pile of droid heads behind him) along with his requisite toolkit, would you award a bonus? Or would you mandate replacement parts to even make the roll? Would you mandate a base cost to replace whole components?

I think I'm getting a little hung up on the word CRITICAL and what every other system has done with the critical table. Many of the results are more NIGGLES than head lopping criticals. If we read blindness as more of a niggle, then cool... a hard check with a medkit/toolbox out in the field is all it takes. If you fail, you wait a week (still trying to figure out why beyond game mechnanics)... unless treatment takes a week (which I think I might prefer). If you succeed, you remove the critical and restore sight (presumably in less time than a week).

If the crit table is read more viciously, then cybernetic eyes (7,500 credits) and droid replacement parts (cost unknown) will have to be sourced before any medicine/mechanic rolls can be made.

Just would like a sense of how others are interpreting critical recovery, and if you're treating walking toasters different to walking carpets. Thanks in advance.

Permanent effects are not mitigated. If you permanently lost a Characteristic point (Gruesome Injury) or a limb (Maimed) they are still lost. The Medicine check only removes the Critical itself so you won't suffer a +10 on subsequent Critical rolls. Granted, the Blinded effect is ambiguous, but since it's relatively high up on the Critical table I'd say it's permanent and the character needs to get cybernetic eyes.

I think this is another case where it's up to the gm and the nature of the injury. If the character got some sort of caustic liquid in fthere eyes they could be blinded but sufficient medical skills alone could fix it. Where as getting slashed across the face could damage three eyes beyond repair.

Only if you're a Gran... :)

Personally, you can look at other topics that show how inferior droids are to other species so I do allow them to be repaired easier.
