New player seeking advice

By Dalinair, in X-Wing

Hi all, just started playing x-wing last night, I was rebel and was against imperial but I found i was getting slaughtered every game, first match was the 2 ties vs 1 xwing and i died quickly in that from being focused down, next game we moved upto 60 points which was me with 2 a-wings vs 4 tie fighters and I got hammered in that as well, last game was 3 ties and an advanced vs 2 x-wings and i lost that one badly as well.

I guess my problem seems to be I might be taking far too few units? But I just cant seem to beat the tie fighter spam lists, any advice on doing that? thanks!

in terms of power an x-wing is roughly equal to two academy pilots. once u get a few more ships for both factions playing 100pt battles is recommended. people that play this game alot usually favour one faction over the other. both can win. the game is very balanced, esp at 100pt squads. play experience does help, so do the dice you roll as well as the tactics u use. so dont lose faith with the rebels. once u get more pilots (recommend x-wing expansion pack) you will have even more options for rebels. my fav rebel squad is Luke + Wedge + Biggs (all with shield upgrades, luke with r2d2& draw their fire). more upgrade options will help you try out different combinations. keep playing and often. you will improve in ur squad building as well as ur flying and tactical abilities :)

Thanks for the tip, we do have enough to play at 100 but so far had just scaled it down till we got used to playing. Frankly the idea that those 4 tie's would just increase to 6 was worrying me a bit!

A-Wings on their own are usually in trouble. They work much better used in tandem with ships that can put out more damage or take a beating.

Other than that, not really enough information to say why you're losing so badly. The X-Wing is generally a very balanced ship. I personally don't enjoy flying them, but the battle against two TIEs should be close, most of the time. Are you using your Target Locks? That's usually a good option.

A-Wings against TIEs straight up is also a very unfavorable match-up - not QUITE as bad as going head-on against Interceptors, which also out-gun them, but 2 attack versus 3 agility is not ideal. And being TIEs, there are going to be more of them than there are of you.

I've had 2 TIEs, 1 X-Wing go either way. If the TIEs can stay out of the X-Wing's line of fire most of the game, he's in trouble. If he can get in close, one or two 4 dice shots each is going to blow them apart. In the Rebel ships you need to make the most of your (generally) superior guns and things like Target Lock. TL if you think you're going to have a good shot, Focus if you think they're going to have a good shot at you. Take an R2, use fairly liberal K-turns to try and line up kill shots, burning off the stress with any 1-2 speed move on your dial. Stuff like that.

When in doubt, TL at range 3, get to range 2, focus, and torpedo a fool.
