Fantasy Flight prizes

By Thom Servo, in X-Wing

Does anyone else think the prizes Fantasy Flight offers with their game night packages kinda lame? I mean Pilot cards with different pictures? Really?

Thoughts?

i would like to be able to get kits in my store rather than the way it is now when the store can't get the kits.

so i'm very glad the kit is tokens and cards that are NOT needed to play or we would all be on e-bay paying silly money for the items.

i dread to think what some of the star trek attack wing kit promos will sell for, like the ships or DS9 station but i did like the idea of tiles for planets or stations and the alternate stands for models in differant colours.

I like it, especially the acrylic tokens.

What I absolutely would not prefer are items that have unique abilities, dice that change the odds, unique pilots, etc. that you only get if you attend and win a specific event. I'll leave that to other games and companies.

Quite happy the way it is. Maybe the winner could get a bigger trophy. Don't ruin the game with special dice.

I couldn't agree more, when I heard about the special Star Trek event dice I felt bad for the players of that game.

What is lame is exclusive playable pieces (like in Attack Wing unfortunately). The alternate artwork cards and acrylic tokens are nice to have for sure, but the thing is they aren't really a game-changing necessity. FFG is doing it right.

I have the acrylic target locks and the pilot cards but honestly I really don't care. I was interested in playing games not winning trinkets.

If you don't really care... Umm, hmm, well... how do I put this. I'll take those target locks,

For true competitive play, there does need to be that edge, and draw of possibly being able to make money from your winnings. There needs to be that combination of a great game, and all that entails, such as the play of the game, and the pieces, as well as great prizing. I don't think FFG needs go the way of loaded dice, or pilots or ships that have a huge edge over the rest of the game, but there does need to be prize exclusives, if the game wants staying power, and to truly allow the game to grow. Otherwise, it will just become more of a hobby game, like D&D is.

I think as players, most of us like to get the "shiny stuff", and I am all for it, as long as it isn't some special item that can affect game play.

I wouldn't agree. Miniature gaming has been around for years. The idea of unique game changing prizes is fairly recent to the war gaming scene. It is one side but not a needed one.

Making money? Well that's fine too if FFG wants to run those kind of tournaments. Heck, Star Craft people can make a living off tournaments. But every Star Craft competitor plays the exact same game. It would be a very different competition if one person walked in and could spawn Zerg at half price in half the time simply because he won the last regional. Who would want to play against that person?

I fully agree we don't need pilots or ships that keep making winners winners. I don't think anything so far has made anything previous obsolete, and that's what I also want in prizing. FFG has done brilliantly at keeping things pretty even, in my opinion.

And as for me saying "making money," that was also a wrong way for me to put that. Perhaps more of being able to sell off prizes to feed our habit more.

As a huge Heroclix fan coming over to X-wing, I can tell you that having exclusives that can only be won are HORRIBLE. It brings out the true prize sharks and makes for an unpleasant environment at times.

When I was making a choice between SW and ST, I did not want to have a huge issue with competitive players needing that "special LE" because it makes them that much better and everyone has to have it to win.

That's what made the choice easy, SW, their prizes are alternate art or extra special tokens but nothing that gives someone an edge in the game.

I'm very happy at the way FFG is doing their prizes and hope they continue as really we are here to play a game and have fun!!

I agree that a special ship prize wouldn't be welcome. If the only way to get a tie defender would be to win a tournament, I'd be rather upset. A uniquely painted/modelled ship, or different art work/trophy would work fine though.

CANNOT agree enough. If they wanted to do a sweet special paint job, a YT rebuilt to look like the Oota Goota, a Y-Wing with all the cowlings in place, whatever, cool. Pilot cards with alternate art? Groovy. Fancy pimped out tokens, templates, or dice - if we're talking like cool translucent or metallic dice or something, not BETTER dice, awesome. But I think it would be an awful, awful move on their part to make anything that altered the gameplay itself available as a reward. Hand out some sweet limited sculpts or repaints or something, absolutely.

I agree with those of you against exclusive ships. New artwork for existing cards is a nice incentive for those of us who are crazy about such things. And it doesn't imbalance the game, or create (or add to) an unpleasant playing environment. +1 for "FFG is doing it right".

Yeah. I have seen the chaos that can ensue from having exclusive prizes. I watched a Heroclix tournament once, and the prize was some enormous one off model. Turns out is was legal for regular play too. The arguments I heard that day were deafening, and really cemented my decision not to ever try to play in a tournament with this kind of prize.

I don't mind alt art, or tokens. If you decide to make things that break the game for others who cannot or will not go to the tournament scene, then you do not need my money or time.

I wholeheartedly agree: cosmetic differences? Nifty. Substantive changes? No thank you.

Alternative art/finish stuff: Awesome.

Game accessories: Awesome.

The pull for this game for me was the "non random" booster aspect. Having Heroclix release a new set every 3 months (sometimes even microsets would get released) was costing 400 ish and those boosters are RANDOM so there is no certain way you can get what you want unless you do second market and sometimes those prices are a joke. That's what I worry about Star Trek that they are going to have extra special ships or pilots that are so sought after they ruin the fun of the game for pure competition.

So far I've spent less on X-wing for an almost entire collection of 2x everything and still it's less than a release of Heroclix.. Yup right there the wife approves!

I agree that there shouldn't be tournament specific "chase" ships or cards, but at the same time I think there needs to be a decent incentive for players to turn up to events. Alt art cards just isn't it.

Change of subject, I wouldn't mind some Limited Edition ship paints (ie boba fett official paint KSE or Signed Ships)

-More Acrylic Tokens (including rulers, critical hits, shields, stress, and other cool pieces

-Limited Edition Dice (reserved for placing high in regional, national, or world tournaments)

-LImited Edition Ships (like the repaint idea or slightly altered concept ships)

-Early Release Prizes (Which have been done)

-Maps

-Bigger Trophies

These are my list of prizes I would like to see, none are game changing and while some prize goers would flock like geese, I expect good competition regardless of any tournament I'm in.

These would be awesome, especially some maps rather than just playing on blank table surfaces.

FFG is doing it right. The Star Trek kits are going for 150 on ebay, and really kind of ruin the spirit of it all. Keep up the good work.

Maps would be cool, but I'd be surprised if they did that. Gale Force 9 already has at least 4 3x3 battle maps out for X-Wing, and FFG seemed to be going a slightly different direction with the star tiles thing. Although who knows what's going on with that at the moment.
