R2D2 used properly ?

By Mishgun2k, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Played my first game with it today and this little guy kept replenishing shields like a champ.

I was bringing 1 shield back per turn every time my X Wing performed a green manuever. Was that correct ?

What are people's thoughts on this upgrade ? in a 3 ship battle seemed very powerful

You were playing it correctly, and he's a solid little upgrade. At low point games (30-50) he's honestly pretty broken.

In standard sized games he's decent but not great. One shield back per turn is nice, but it's still only one shield, and concentrated fire will quickly overwhelm that regeneration. He will draw a lot of attention, though, because your opponent almost has to take him out early. If an X-wing with R2-D3 is still flying once attrition reduces things to one ship on either side, it'll be very difficult to take it out.

The only exceptions are of course:

You can only RECOVER up to your max shield value (as per the card's text).

You can recover a shield before hitting an obstacle, but not before hitting a proximity mine (FAQ).

Otherwise go nuts. Ideally, as Buhallin hinted, you want to keep him close enough to the action to get hit, but far enough away to avoid concentrated fire.

I'm looking forward to adding a shield upgrade to R2's X wing at some point in the future, getting the max value from his ability.

Luke + R2-D2 + Shield Upgrade is a REALLY good setup. It's quite a bit of points but I feel it's worth it most of the time.

If you add engin upgrade to bost could you potentially get two shields back a turn? In everyone's opinion if this did work would it be better or worse than shield upgrade?

I dont think a boost counts as a green manuever. So this doesnt work.

Boost is an "action" not a "maneuver" even though they are both movements and share some game effects in common.

Why Luke in particular?

Luke + R2-D2 + Shield Upgrade is a REALLY good setup. It's quite a bit of points but I feel it's worth it most of the time.

Luke's ability lets him focus on offense, R2-D2 lets him regain shields, and he is an X-Wing with 6 hit points first turn. He has a mini-focus for his points cost. One of my favorite X-Wing pilots.

He has a mini-focus for *defense* anyway.

The thing with Luke is that he's excellent defensively, as far as X-wings go. His ability can make him annoying to hit, an extra shield makes him harder to crit, and R2 bringing a shield back every green move makes him extra annoying to whittle down. Your opponent has to make a hard choice about pouring on enough fire to get rid of Luke quick - which may mean ignoring a bigger offensive threat - or giving him free rein to run around focusing on doing damage while you deal with his teammates.

I think CrookedWookie summed it up nicely.

Why thank you.

I'm actually a big fan of D2 on Y-Wings as well. They have a similar dial to the X-Wing at low speed, in terms of greens, a point more of shields, and you know they're going to take some hits, but R2-D2 can make them really a drag to finish off. But obviously one of the named guys only - maybe Dutch as part of a combo with Garven or something.
