Is the Blaster Turret near useless now?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

This was good playing, period. Eagletsi111 took a HWK with a blaster turret knowing it would struggle to kill Dark Curse. His opponent took Dark Curse, knowing it would struggle to kill anything.

If his opponent had taken a ship more suited to laying out punishment, he wouldn't have needed that much time to drop the HWK. Also, IIRC eagletsi111 said he took his time, playing "safe" rather than risk running through asteroids/etc. Well, running out of time is the risk you take in exchange for mitigating the risk of being shot at by the HWK main guns and/or hitting asteroids.

Just to update everyone. I have actually been told by other players at the store they were impressed the way I turned it into a win. Dodging and out thinking him for that amount of time.

Yesterday I played the same guy again (Random draw of 12 players, was it Karma or a setup for revenge?), all 3 of his big guys went after my Hwk just cause he was pissed. That was his undoing. I easily flanked him with my xwings, and Awing and took down his big guys, while they easily destroyed my HWK, but he was in poor position and a few protons took them down for the easy win.

But hey he got my hawk!

Nice!

The thing about DarkCurse and other focus negating fighters is that they still have to eat all the hits from an Autoblaster.

I would agree with them. The very idea that you should of 'fought like a man' and fly stright into his guns is moronic at best. If he couldn't kill off your HWK then he didn't deserve to win, period.

There is no rules against trying to outrun the clock. If you spent 15 minutes setting your dial for your one ship or something then yes that's poor sportsman ship. But as long as you keep taking your turn in a fair amount of time you are playing fair.

You were doing the only thing you could really do. There's no dishonor in that, IMO.

The HWK is a support ship, playing it as such is a good use of it, it's not designed to fly into the teeth of the enemy. I use Ors with an Ion Cannon, keep her cruising around within R3 of my strike fighters, ioning when I can and adding an extra attack dice where needed. With Nien Numb as crew, she has lots of nice green options.

They are most akin to flying a Y-Wing, slow steady, supporting the main strike, no need for crazy turns or intricate flying, be steady, be smart and make your opportunities count. I had mine with Wedge, do you know how bad that makes him? :-)

The point is, you fly to a ships strengths and if you can't you fly to avoid its weaknesses. Eaglisti flew exactly correctly, he wasn't gaming, nor using time wasting, he flew his ship to its best advantage at that stage of the game.

I am hazarding his opponent flew DC to get the advantage over the turret. It didn't pay off in this game. I say nicely done on out thinking someone in a tough spot.

You know when the Blaster Turret is useless? When you get the critical damage card that instructs you to discard a secondary weapon. Played a 200 point game yesterday and Kyle Katarn got dealt this card before he could even fire 1 shot with the blaster turret.

Next i played a 100 point game and I GOT THAT SAME CRIT AGAIN ON KATARN! It goes against the Correllian in me to ask, but, What are the odds? 2 games in a row!

At least in the 2nd game it was after i had taken a few shots with the turret. For those few shots I thought the Blaster Turret was pretty great.

The blaster turret seemed to work rather well yesterday against my TIE bomber. "Hit, hit, crit", "hit, hit, crit", repeat...

I find it somewhat amusing that people are apparently upset that dark curse is a bad matchup for blaster turrets, but few of those people ever mention that marksmanship (especially on a 360 degree turret weapon) is a bad matchup for dark curse

That's because you can't use the blasted turret because it requires you to spend a focus. If Marksmanship could satisfy the requirements for Blaster Turret then all would be well. But it can't.
