Dark Glyphs in RtL?

By KarmanMonkey, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I've sort of avoided purchasing dark glyps so far in the campaign, as I really have no clue how to work it out. In Vanilla Descent, unless I'm mistaken, you take the number of glyps you need for the quest (including the Dark Glyps among them), put one normal glyph in play as the players' starting location, then shuffle the rest, meaning that the Dark Glyph will appear at a random point in the quest.

How does it work in RtL? Obviously you would not get one Dark Glyph per level (that would be VERY silly), and since some levels have one face-down glyph, and others have two, you don't exactly know how many glyps to shuffle your Dark One with.

Then again, there's no mention of Dark Glyps anywhere in the RtL rulebook, so I was wondering if they were even allowed. Have people used them? If so, how do they use them?

It's not random. AoD rules, page 5:

"When a new glyph is placed on the map (usually as the result of a new area being revealed), the overlord chooses the glyph from his pool of glyphs. He is allowed to look at their facedown sides to select exactly the glyph he wants ."

Barring anything in the RtL rules to the contrary, I would assume that you buy dark glyphs exactly as often as you customize your deck with treachery, and that you can use them whenever you want (except for any glyphs that start out activated, of course).

Antistone is right, and it's crucial. Different levels can place a huge amount of importance on the glyph. The Gauntlet, the Secret Garden or 2 by 2 for example can be massively affected by a Sundered glyph (though 2 by 2 not so much now Poltergeist is gone).

I thought there was something in the FAQ or maybe Kevin chimed in on using Dark Glyphs in RtL? (or did I see that over on boardgamegeek.com?)

Kevin did mention how to use dark glyphs for RTL. But, it was in the old forum. Anyways, he stated that you purchase a glyph at the start of a dungeon, (when you customize your deck) and then you can use any of those glyphs in any of the levels that come up, but...you can only use purchased glyphs once per dungeon. You cant buy one green glyph, and use it on every level of the dungeon.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies... Somehow I overlooked the fact that it wasn't random when I read the rules on the subject. That will definitely impact my strategy, methinks.
