How do you guys choose?!?

By mr.thomasschmidt, in X-Wing

Hi.

I'm new to this game and have investing some money in it to begin with (2xcore, 1xY, 1xwave2 and 1xwave3) My plan is to get 1xeverything to begin with and then go from there.

BUT, when I see you guys pre-order 2-4xeverything (or just some) of the new wave BEFORE you have had the chanse to actually play with them I think to myself that this must be due to one (both) of two things: 1. You know something I don't yet because I'm all new to this still. 2. You are just die hard fans ;):P

Either way, what makes YOU pre-order more than just 1 of ships you haven't tried before?

Mostly because the cards for upgrades that we know will be useful require multiple ship purchases. (and we all love Star Wars and want lots of ships :D )

Alot of reasons.

1. Yeah, they are die hard.

2. The cards and contents of the expansions are known so people order more for specfic cards.

3. This game sells out really quickly. So you order big from the beginning so you don't go months without stuff you want.

My order for wave 3 was 2 B-wings, 2 Bombers, 1 Shuttle, 1 Moldy Crow.

I think that will be pretty standard for MOST people.

As I feared then :D

But how do you know the cards? Are there spoilers like with the LCG's?

For me, just being dumb :P only kidding...

I like playing balanced games so I only got one each of the larger ships and really don't have any desire to purchase more. 4 each TIE Interceptors and A-Wings because hey, they're interceptors and should work alone. After that 2 each because, liking balance, I really don't need spam list. The obvious exception of the main attack fighter, 4 X-Wings and 6 to 8 TIE/ln.

Now that I've said that I'll admit to purchasing more than 2 each so yes, in my opinion I've over bought -_- and doubt I'll play them or play them often. For example I've never fielded more than 2 Y-Wings or 2 A-Wings.

I did specifically purchase 3 HWK-290 because wanted them in scenarios NOT spam list, i.e. unarmed and/or disabled etc.

It's just me but I'd probably be just fine with 2 of each after the fighters. And why 2 of each? It gives me diversity and I LOVE the miniatures.

P.S. Yes there are ALWAYS spoilers. It is more like LCG and must less like CCG which we celebrate and cheer.

Either way, what makes YOU pre-order more than just 1 of ships you haven't tried before?

lots of reasons.

One I'm a big fan of the ship designs. the more I like them the more I am likely to own. I also like repainting my ships, so I have a custom painted X Wing for Red 1, Red 2, Red 3, Red 5 and Red 6. see http://buckaroo13.blogspot.com/2012/09/red-2-red-3-x-wing-repaints-continued.html

I think for some ships you don't get a synergy until you field multiples. For example, 1 Y-Wing with ion cannon, okay, 3 Y-Wings with Ion Cannons - Awesome

I agree with everything others have said but to add my two cents

1) there is always a short supply of ships

2) If you need multiples of cards/ upgrades you need multiple of the same ships, Only necessary if playing in tournaments not friendly

3) Spoilers--- Just keep checking the forums easiest, ffg, boardgamegeek and, a few maneuvers

now ships are out you can find complete lists compiled on sites like Team Covenant

hope we helped

I initially order 1-2 of everything, then playtest and learn which upgrades and ships fit my preferred play style and what I think I will use in tournaments, etc. I initially bought 1 TIE Bomber, but by the end of the week I will have six - it's my favorite ship from Wave 3 by far. My favorite upgrades so far are Darth Vader crewmember and Navigator, and I think I like Anti-Pursuit Lasers but still not sure how practical they are with the kinds of squads I prefer to play. Also haven't tested B-Wings but I suspect I will own 3-4 eventually. The HWK is by far my least favorite of the new ships - I just haven't found much use for it yet, and the unique upgrades are interesting but not yet compelling enough to buy multiples.

P.S.

  1. It is a miniature game I don't have to paint.
  2. The detail, scale and quality is very good.
  3. The detail, scale and quality is very good (I said that didn't I).
  4. It is a game that contains highly detailed miniatures in a good scale with excellent painting, which I don't have to do, in a fictional universe that I'm rather fond of.
  5. The game is actually very playable and fun also.

P.S. There are some that will buy a few and never play because of the quality and the fact it is Star Wars.

As I feared then :D

But how do you know the cards? Are there spoilers like with the LCG's?

Yes the are. Team Covenant http://teamcovenant.com/ as well as Board Game Geeks http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/103885/star-wars-x-wing-miniatures-game both list the cards as we find out about them. So most of us knew more or less what the ships and cards would be before we ordered any.

Then a lot of us knew that we might not get a 2nd chance to pick up more, so we ordered as many as we thought we might want right away. If I order 2 B-Wings and find I really want 4, getting that other 2 a month or more from now might be difficult.

Then there's people like me, who will order 3-4 of a given ship just because I like having a complete collection.

I throw all the pilot cards up in the air. The ones that land face up, I start there.

The ships and cards are usually spoiled well in advance, or at least some of them, so you can make an educated guess.

In wave 1 I was new and a little overzealous and got 8 ties, of which I have only ever used maybe 5 at once, and 3 Tie advanceds and y-wings which I rarely field more than one of at a time, although those I can at least see myself using eventually whereas flying a huge swarm of TIEs does not really interest me

In wave 2, they added two of my favorite ships (a-wing and interceptor) so I preordered 5 of each, which is the maximum number that can be fielded in a 100 point game. I don't use all 5 of them at once very often but I have done it, especially the interceptors, and 5 a-wings gives me 5 copies of push the limit which is a pretty nice card. I only ordered two firesprays (mostly for the stealth device cards) and one falcon, which turned out to be the sweet spot for those ships, although I wouldn't mind another falcon for two more shield upgrade cards, and it would give me enough falcons to run two simultaneous games, which I have enough ships and equipment to provide for.

Wave 3 I pre-ordered pretty early so I was still not that informed, but I wanted a bunch of each fighter without totally overdoing it on cost. I went with 4 bombers, 4 b-wings, 3 HWKs, and 2 shuttles. My biggest failed guess was probably on the HWKs as I was partly just trying to get enough blaster turrets for my Y-wings, which after the full spoiler came out was revealed as maybe not being very good on Y-wings after all. Two shuttles is probably a little unnecessary but I like having at least two of every ship and shuttles are great for running scenarios

If you are trying to get a decent collection (ie the ability to field both imps and rebels well) I find my current collection does well.

5 TIE

3 INT TIE

2 Advanced TIE

2 Bomber (3 would be better)

1 Firespray (2 would be better)

1 Lamada

3 X-wing

2 Y-wing

2 A-wing

2 B-wing

1 Falcon

1 HWK

Really glad I held off on buying more X-wings and TIE INT given they have an expansion coming out for them.

Definitely will be getting both of those. The new TIE INT look SWEET!

You have the opption of choosing sides here to. Dont spend money on both rebels and emprire if you dont want to. Pick the side you find most fitting to your needs. Or do as i did, spend a thousand bucks and buy a **** loads of ships.

I just buy all I can so there will be none for other players. I am a hoarder.

Hm, I think I like your list. I'll concider a list like that. I had actually a 3rd core set ordered but since I'll be ordering the 2/3 tie int expansions, 2/3 tie adv, the X expansion and the big ship with the included x wing I just cancelled it...and ordered a 2nd Slave and bomber so I now have 3 :)

Might go for 2 more Y and A so I'll have 3 of each. Don't know why but 3 just feels like the "right" number with those two ships. As well as the tie bomber, inter and adv.

I just buy all I can so there will be none for other players. I am a hoarder.

LOL Great post. +5 points. You have truely joined the dark side.

I make too much money, and have nothing better to spend it on...

Considering the new packs we know out soon. I've been trying not to over order so.

I think 2 core sets

and 1 x wing, ywing, tie adv and tie Ln (I am expecting a second paint scheme for y wing soon)

2 tie/in

1 falcon

1 slave

1 A-wing (I got two but I feel they will introduce a new paint scheme soon)

1 lamda

1 hawk

2 tie bomber

2 B wings

1 Imperial Ace set

Possibly the rebel fleet transport for depending on rebel pilot cards for a regular non epic or cinematic list.

That list alone you are looking at least $415 unless you order through a discount site like MM.

I buy (will buy) three to twelve of everything, because it looks good...Ha,Ha!

I have learned that (a) things sell out, and (b) there's a use for pretty much every ship. So I always start with the assumption that I'll get one of everything. Then, as cards are revealed and I start tinkering with squad build ideas, I expand on that. Hence my current order, which I think is arriving today... 3x B-wing, 3x Bomber, 1x HWK, 1x Shuttle.

I'll play with those for a while and see if I really want more (like the 2nd Firespray I also ordered after playing with one for a few months).

I make too much money, and have nothing better to spend it on...

We should talk!

I knew I was going Rebel... so I tried to get rebels! I had no other choice than to get a YT-1300 to begin with. After that I ordered the a core set and 2x a-wings cuz I love a-wings. When my local store got wave 3, I bought 2 B-wings and a HWK-290. I still need 2 X-wings and Y-wings each.

After that it's a matter of biding my time til I can afford more, and get more. Then end up getting Imp stuff.
