SoCal forum brawl

By TheKestrel, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Met up with CaliAlpha from the forums here at the local shoppe for a bit of dogfighting today.

We played 3 games, one at 120 points, one at 100, and then the shuttle scenario from the ruleset, also at 100.

The first game was an expanded version of my Krassis list (Krassis, HLC, shield upgrade; Soontir Fel, PTL, Stealth; Avenger Squadron; Avenger Squadron) against Cali's with a Chewbacca-based list. I think it was Chewie, Ten Numb (FCS, shield upgrade), and Tycho, but it's been a long day and I really can't remember the upgrades but it seems likely there were some missiles/torpedoes in there.

It was my first time playing with against of the wave 3 stuff, so I was pretty determined to make sure it died. That turned out to be pretty easy... my red dice were strong again this day, and with only one evade it didn't take more than 2 turns of HLC + Soontir to wipe that thing out of my airspace. I was honestly surprised how fast it died, which I will definitely have to keep in mind.

Anyway, Tycho ended up running around the perimeter of the fight, coming in for the flank – but by the time he got there the B-Wing was gone and Chewie was taking a pounding. But he wandered into combined firing arcs, so I took the opportunity and dusted him while he was there. Chewie died the following turn. Most of my ships were unharmed, except Krassis who had a few hits left.

Next up Cali wanted to try flying his brand new TIE Bomber, so I switched sides, and he was nice enough to let me give the B-Wing a shot. I went as simple as possible with this squad: Blue Squadron w/ FCS and two proton torpedoes (yes, HLC would have been better/cheaper, but I put this together in a hurry and anyway I knew I'd want the added crit potential against the bomber), and three Rookie X-Wings (one of them with a torpedo).

He flew Major Rhymer with two missiles (don't recall if there was anything else there), Vader with PTL/Shield, and two Black Squadron TIEs.

Maneuvering a missile-heavy squadron against an opponent with higher pilot skill is tough, so that part of things didn't work out as planned. I flew it nice and slow on turn 1, hoping to set up to get my locks on turn 2. I did, but I also ended up out of arc or at range 1 against most of the targets. The X-Wing went ahead and fired his at Rhymer and completely whiffed. That was the only one of the torpedoes I got off the whole game, but it didn't end up mattering.

Relatively soon it turned into a very tight furball in the center, and both Rhymer and Vader stranded themselves on asteroids, taking no damage but not getting to fire. Since they both ended up out of my arcs, all four ships concentrated on one unlucky TIE and it died quickly. Rhymer followed soon after, then the other TIE, then finally a very resilient and maneuverable Vader who just wasn't going to survive being in the middle of all 4 of my ships.

Lost no ships this game, but did lose shields on all of them, I think. The dice gods definitely shined on me. My attacks were good and it seemed like almost every time I really needed to evade, I got juuuust enough.

Finally, we played the shuttle scenario with custom squads. I flew "Try And Keep Up" (Soontir Fel and Turr Phennir, both stealthed/PTL; plus 3 Academy TIEs). He flew Dutch, Arvel, Garven, and Biggs... Biggs having a shield upgrade but that's about it.

This one rapidly turned into one of the biggest cluster**** I've ever seen. I can't even count how many collisions there were as ships attacking and defending tried to swarm over the shuttle. This led to a nasty death for Soontir and some good opportunities for Arvel's ability – too bad 2 attack dice is still a stretch to do anything with.

Ultimately this ended up very close. It took me 2-3 turns to take out Biggs, so the shuttle was about 1/3 across before I landed the first hit on it. I lost Soontir and one other TIE fighter, but ended the game with 4 TIEs all at range 1 of the shuttle. Killed Biggs, Garven, and Arvel, with only Dutch being completely untouched. The shuttle was probably 2 turns, but possible as little as 1, from being able to exit the table.

Anyway, a good series of games, and good to meet CaliAlpha who was a good sport and nice enough to let me use his stuff! Hope to play again soon.

It was my pleasure to play. It was fun even though I lost all 3 games. Now I need to start building my squads out more and not just picking them random a bit. PLUS the dice were so on your side this day( and that plastic board too was not good with dice). You may won the battle but the war isn't over haha. Good game overall, had fun and hopefully next time we could do a lot more points with the wave 3 ships. Since I am not used to running 100 point games.

Yeah, I'll prepare a few 150s for next time, once my ships come in. We can do a game or two like that and one or two at 100. Call it "home field advantage" for each of us. :)

For sure maybe get a 200 points just for the hell of it haha. I just received my wave 3 tonight. Since you been playing more than me. Most likely going to beat me again unless the dice roll in my favor this time.

Haha, well, you'll get a few weeks here where I probably won't be able to play at all! Cue training montage...

Well I just play for fun so my squad building is not that good. I am thinking of making custom scenarios.
