Character retirement or another try?

By Talley Darkstar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Now I know the game hasn't been out long and there's not enough material to make the character work how I want I've had in the back of my head for a number of years now to retire the character or give it another attempt, or even modify the character.

The character and "class", if you can call it a class, is a character I had in the Star Wars Galaxies MMO, way back when. So when I created him, the Star Wars universe was his home.

The character is basically a group enhancement specialist. Granting extra moves, range, offense bonuses, defense bonuses, etc. The Warlord class in D&D 4th Ed gave me exactly what I wanted for the character.

So far, the talent that comes close to how I see the character is Command from the Mercenary Soldier specialization. The group I 99% of the time play with, is more like the A-Team versus the Rebel Alliance Spec-Ops group I wish the group was more like. Now that's not a bad thing, The character is a member of the Rebel Alliance and squad leader of a group of Spec-Ops/A-Team people who take on those risky Ops that only PCs can manage.

What we know so far, does a Group Enhancement Specialist have a future in EotE or should he just retire from the Rebel Alliance and go find a Dagobah like planet and live out his final years in obscurity?

The modification part I mentioned, he's always been a ground fighter. Keeping with the same idea, should I move him to space and have him more of a Squadron Leader?

I see no reason that he couldn't be a vibrant part of a chronicle. Just because a game may not grant bonuses or have abilities that exactly fit a concept doesn't mean that the concept is barren. Some of it may simply have to be role played.

Don't worry about perfect builds and simply enjoy the character with what you have at hand.

For example...

Give him a high cool and vigilance. That will help him give orders to the rest of the party to keep them at the forefront of any ambush or firefight. (i.e. High Initiative slot that can be shared)

You already mentioned Command, but also think about Field Commander and Improved Field Commander from the same tree. I would also take the Politico Spec to gain Inspiring Rhetoric and the Improved version.

A few well placed knowledge skills and I think you would have a good character. In fact, I may create him as an NPC for my blog. Keep in mind, that is not even considering what may be available in AoR and later supplements.

Oh for sure. Over the last 9 years of playing the character in WEG,Saga and in the D&D game Talley's been in, he's been a fun character to play. So much potential for random adventures or arcs or whatever. Especially in D&D when I grant an extra attack or buff to defenses or whatever, I just giggle to myself at their success. While they do as much damage they can per round, I'm more of a strategist. It could just be that he isn't compatible with my group's play style.

As for the other Talents, yeah, things like that. I wasn't really looking at the book to give all specifics, but yeah, I am hoping that AoR gives me more options to go with. >:)

Currently, here's his stats, so far, he's looking pretty good.

Human - Hired Gun - Mercenary Soldier

Took extra obligation as we have such a large group. I think if everyone actually played we'd be at 7 or 8 people in the core group, not including a GM. lol And that could be an issue for the character/player as well, such a large group.

Brawn 3

Agility 2

Intellect 2

Cunning 2

Willpower 3

Presence 3

(Human) Cool 1

(Career/Specialization) Discipline 2

(Specialization/XP) Leadership 2

(Human) Perception 1

(Career) Resilience 1

(Career) Vigilance 1

(Career) Ranged - Light 1

(XP) Ranged - Heavy 1

(XP) Gunnery 1

(XP) Command

This actually sounds like an interesting character. You might want to consider buying into the Politico specialization, as the "Inspiring Rhetoric" talent sounds like something that would suit him.

I'm planning to play a very similar character in a group of mostly kids. I figure half of my support power will come not from my talents, but from the fact that I understand the system better. My intention is to try and call out strategy and coordinate the initiative dance. I'll make sure to point out that they don't have to listen to me. When I call out, "Pilot, take evasive action, and you hike up those deflector shields!" it's because I think it's a good idea, but I'm ordering them about in character, and I have no real authority. I would say talk it out with the other players. Figure out some good tactics within the system, and be the tactical expert. Then really drive it home by handing out boost dice like candy.

Why brawn of 3? I would think 3 cunning or intellect would be better unless its a prerequisite.

If you're using the AoR beta, there are a few options, there, too. The Commander/Tactician comes to mind.

That fits perfectly, I'm trying to get a hold of the beta actually.

I figure with being in the Alliance and helping evacuate and relocated various number of places he might have beefed up a bit more than average due to moving equipment and gear and what not. But, until I get AoR, it's just a general idea at the moment. I've been thinking about reworking some of the characteristics myself.

You already mentioned Command, but also think about Field Commander and Improved Field Commander from the same tree. I would also take the Politico Spec to gain Inspiring Rhetoric and the Improved version.

Mind you, I don't have a completely firm grasp of all the character archetypes yet, but Fang just suggested what I was gonna say. The ability to add one Blue to everyone or handle getting extra blacks with Inspiring Rhetoric and, recover strain for team member and whatnot might be what your looking for.

Just a thought.

Well it's good to see the character idea is actually liked by someone other than me. lol Especially since I've got roughly a 3 page history of the character that stems from almost every SW game I've played. SWG mmo, WEG, SW:TOR, Saga Edition, as well as a few non-SW games, D&D, Skyrim, and I probably could go on. Maybe for a special treat for some of you, I'll get a library up and running of various pics of Talley running around the multiverse. As well as post the rough draft of Talley's history if anyone's interested.

Let me know if this doesn't work. There's a link at the bottom for a rough background on him.

Ok, his background isn't quite what I was hoping, it's a download. Here soon if anyone's interested I'll get something else up that's a little better.
