Question about Promo Revenant

By Nasuko, in UFS Rules Q & A

Just realized I posted this in the wrong topic so I started it again in rules Q & A, still need an answer though.

I just have a quick rules question about the new promo revnant. His first ability, is While this card is ready, all attacks get -1 damage. I was wondering if he gives the -1 damage and I commit him would the attack get the damage back? and if not if he were to get readied would the attack then get a 2nd -1 damage? I'm just curious how this stagnant works.

it would be nice if you included a quote of the text or a pic of the card since it's quite hard to search for cards that havent been in circulation.

from the text that you put up there would be a -1 to the dmg of an attack as long as hes ready and when he commits it goes away.

it'd kinda be like an effect that says for the rest of the turn, as long as this card is in your card pool, all attacks get -1 damage. subbing in being in your card pool for being ready.

Unless the rules changed. Static effects are always checking them selves in, as in there always checking if there conditions are met to apply. Therefore stating once you commit Rev's, the ability can not meet its requirement, therefore the effect becomes null. The attack will go back to it's original damage without the -1.

Note that you really could not care less if you stack the the -1 effect. With all the minimum 1 damage reduction out there, Rev's alone knocks defender loops and "must deal damage" effects off the map.

His second static effect is that when he is commited, all blocked attacks deal no damage... He's kinda gross don't ya think?

the minus 1 is static so it'll come into effect before any minimum 1 damage reduction....unless you have him commited and ready him during the attack

Good point, but i won't submit yet.

Situation:

Mega Spike is played successfully by the opponent. The damage becomes 2 because of Rev. Then you Cutting Edge by one to put it at 1 damage.

Now here is the tricky bit.

Static effect is just there because Rev. Just because it is static does not mean it stacks with on or with regular enhance or response ability. It is omnipresent effect meaning no matter what it will kick in. So it still should override or by pass the minimum restriction on Cutting Edge and turn the now 1 damage Mega Spike to 0.

Now I will agree that you must play an ability that drops the attack to the initial 1 damage, meaning the an attack at 5 damage must be knocked down to 1, but once it is down Rev will knock it to 0.

Some exact card text would be great.

I'm looking at him right now Tag, the exact card text is and I quote.

" While this card is ready, all attacks get -1 damage."

" While this card is committed, any unblockable attacks may be blocked"

I really hope he can slam minimum 1's cause then I'll build him earth, I hope this helps settle this argument.

since its always there then when a reduction occurs the minimum 1 sees it too, so it reduces the attacks damage to what it sees as 1.

I would suppose it would depend on if the ability is constantly checked during the attack or only when the attack is first played. Jaguar Revolver from The Dark Path has the same issue so I would assume that the ruling for this card will also apply for Revenant.

The -1 is applied when an attack is played, and will not be removed if he gets committed.

If you want to get creative, you can have him committed, reduce the damage of an attack, then ready him with something like Arrogant and Insolent to get the -1 to apply when the attack is already at 1 damage...

Technically, doesn't Revenant's second ability not work at all?

Can't beats can. Or you know, since there is no block step for an unblockable attack you never actually get the chance to block.

I thought we were supposed to be past all of the poorly worded cards now...

Golden rule may be applicable here.

definitely golden rule. unblockable attacks skip the block step, but this ability changes the nature of the unblockable status so that it may be blocked.

you can only block during the block step, so there it is.

(and this card was designed... a... LONG... time ago.)
