Runewars Minis as Cheap Alt to Descent

By Hawkman2000, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Do any of the Runewars hero minis replicate the older heroes from Descent? If one were to buy Runewars and the Descent conversion kit, could one essentially have more heroes to add to Descent?

I know the army related minis would be out of scale, but the heroes look like the same sculpts.

They more than "look like", they ARE the same. As the heroes of the expansion

so, yes, you can (even if in a pure timeline logic, runewars and descent are separated by something around a century)

Yup, as Rugal said, they're the same. :) And for anyone wondering, the heroes included in the base game are:

  • Varikas the Dead
  • Mad Carthos
  • Runewitch Astarra
  • Silhouette
  • Ronan of the Wild
  • Mordrog
  • One Fist
  • Sir Valadir
  • Red Scorpion
  • Battlemage Jaes
  • Elder Mok
  • Bogran the Shadow

And in the expansion:

  • Andira Runehand
  • Grey Ker
  • Ispher
  • Landrec the Wise
  • Lyssa of the East
  • Steelhorns
  • Trenloe the Strong
  • Vyrah the Falconer

There's no timeline difference. Runewars is set in the current "present day" time period, as is Descent 2E.

Descent 1E wasn't really tied down in the timeline, but one assumes it was present day as well.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. I think I might go this route instead of hunting them down on Ebay.

Runebound works too. I never played Runewars, but I very much enjoy Runebound. I've lost my share of minis in my time, so my Descent/Runebound just share a common set now.

Runebound is pretty hard to find nowadays, though. Runewars is much easier to find.

Isn't runewars the "dragon wars", the old one that belthir talks about from centuries ?

Did I miss something ?

No, The events described in Runewars are not the Dragon Wars. It is a new large-scale conflict starting up in the "present day" of the game setting.

The Dragon Wars are described in the introduction to Runewars as the third of three "darknesses" that have fallen across Terrinoth in the past. The Dragonlords sought out the Stars of Timmoran and carved their own magic runes upon the fragments they found, thus creating the rune stones that everyone uses to this day.

The Dragon Wars lasted for a couple centuries, give or take (there's not much in the way of specific dates provided), but they only ended about 30 years ago. This is mentioned explicitly in the Mists of Zanaga expansion for Runebound, and it is implied in the Shadow Rune campaign for D2E when it is mentioned that the Shadow Binders trapped Gryvorn in his prison rune 30 years ago.

In fairness, there was a web-published document from FFG back when Runebound 2E was first published that said the Dragon Wars ended 300 years ago, but that information has since been contradicted by enough officially published sources that I think it's safe to say it doesn't count anymore. =P

So, as I thought, there's some contradictions anyway

thanks for the help

Is there a place where we can read about the lore? I would really like to read about the world's history.

There's no official source to read the lore, save reading all the fluff text you can find on cards and in rule books for all the games set in Terrinoth.

I have a compiled fluff document up on BGG ("Runiverse Fluff") in the D2E files section. It's not official, but I have tried to stick to what's written as much as possible.

*goes to reading right away*

Thanks ^.^! It will be interesting to see what the rest of the world and history is like outside of D2

If I want to get all the Descent 1E expansion figures, what Runebound packs will I need to buy?

If I'm not mistaken, you already own the D1E core box, based on conversation in another thread. That being the case, you have no use for Runebound core or the Island of Dread expansion. You also have no use for Runewars or its only expansion, Banners of War. (Unless you want them as games in their own right, of course. I rather like all the Terrinoth games.)

You can get 6 new heroes in Runebound: Sands of Al-Kalim. The same 6 heroes come in D1E: Altar of Despair.

6 new heroes in Runebound: Frozen Wastes, which are the same 6 found in D1E: Tomb of Ice.

6 new heroes in Drakon (3rd edition), which are the same 6 found in D1E: Well of Darkness.

Finally, 6 new heroes in DungeonQuest, not available elsewhere.

Plus 4 "promo" heroes that are notoriously difficult to find. (You can probably get Nara the Fang in a copy of D1E: Sea of Blood. She was technically only included in first print run copies, but I'm not sure how many additional print runs were actually made - it seems like every copy I've seen had her in it.)

The 6 heroes in Runebound: Mists of Zanaga were never translated to D1E and therefore do not have hero cards in the D2E Conversion Kit.

Note that in terms of monster figures, there really isn't any substitute for the D1E expansions. Runewars monsters are a different scale so they don't really work as sub-ins for their Descent counterparts. Besides which I think that any Runewars monsters you might hope to recycle are already represented in the D1E core box anyway.

For monsters, you may also want to keep your eye on BattleLore 2.0. I doubt any of the figures in the base box will apply, as the two main factions are Daqan (humans) and Uthuk Y'llan (who are thus far not well represent at all in Descent, 1E or 2E.) However, future expansion material might prove to give you something to work with. Only time will tell.

Thanks Steve-O, really appreciate sharing your knowledge.

It looks like I am little stuck if I want the monsters, but at least I know I have some options on getting the heroes.

Expansion of the V1 are still foundable, in various languages, if you want. Maybe it will not last long
