So on the update today the Starfield kit was moved from factory to planning stage. Does this mean they have heard the cries for a Death Star trench for the tiles or are they adding something for the new Epic scale? I fear they are adding a must have item so we all are complied to have to have it....

That's fine by me. I recently picked up a game mat, at Gen Con, from GaleForce Nine.

I am still a bit leary about the FFG game tiles. I have a feeling they are redesigning the tiles, to make them lockable -- so they don't move apart during gameplay. We'll see.

I've seen a few of the GF9 mats and they are great. The grippy surface is great for reducing accidental bumps and slides.

I just don't like the hurts-my-eyes space station version.

That one is a bit of an eyesore. The other three are nice though.

The red and the more fiery looking nebula both look out of place. I wish I could find a more plain sort of star field. Is there a sort of surface you can get at a Kinkos that would work?

I think many (most?) here would agree that the tiles, as they were, required a rethink. I can happily wait for a better product. It's not like we can't play the game without 'em!
