I watched it, it was pretty good. I like getting to watch high level matches because it really gives some insight into how you can improve your game.
I do have to say though that the Team Covenant staff make little slip ups on rules all of the time. I would take any combo suggestions or rules criticism with a grain of salt and double check them before you start implementing them in your games. On the whole though what they do for the community is pretty great and the Team Covenant community has a lot of brilliant players in it.
similar firepower lists. the deciding factors seemed to be the x-wings durability (r2d2+shield upgrade is a sweet combo) and target locks... they deliver more consistent damage in the long run. 4dice from HLC is nice but 3 x-wings with target locking ability is even better imo.
Glad to know some of us enjoy these videos. I agree that we should always learn the rules for ourselves, these videos are fun to watch but they are not the best way to learn to master our game.
A few things to be said about it:
Covenant makes the best Battle reports of X-Wing there are and this one makes no exception, its just great. The pity is they hardly do any. I hope they will put the rest of the top 4 matches online too very soon. I like Netrunner and Star wars LCG too, but fact is that they put every boring little game on Gencon and elsewhere on Covenant, but there is only this lonely little single X-Wing match. Where are the rest? I can just hope they need some time editing and uploading, otherwise I would find it very disappointing. I mean I know It's Covenant T C G but come on X-Wing deserves to have a lot more battle reports than there are even if its not a Card game (there are cards in it so I hope this qualifies xd)
Second thing is that it is really a pity I don't live in the states because I would love to compete against these guys some day (and there are just not enough tournaments around where I live). I am convinced I could beat at least some of them. I hardly do any mistakes in movement or predicting enemy movement anymore and I really enjoyed that they pretty much always did what I expected them to do. (Okay I gotta admit I usually don't play at 3AM either so those two might still be way better when they are fitter xd...)
Also I think a little fresh air would be good to the American scene. I see the "big" lists and there are a lot of really strong ones, but there also is a lot of unnecessary meta stuff to them. I mean Hothies lists (I often read about his thoughts and afterthoughts about his lists and games) for example are generally really strong, no doubt about it, but I think he tries too hard to counter some lists he might never even play against and that's probably why he doesn't get further in the end. Well that and I heard he lost against his own sparring partner at Gencon which can always happen XD. Might also have been only bad dice. Don't get me wrong I still think he is an absolute genius in list building and analyzing games but maybe he just thinks about stuff too much XD (BTW I had a rough beating against his delay Wedge list when I played against a friend... very good one!)
This rebel Frog squadron variant is also nice, and it won the championship in the end as I heard, but I see veteran instincts, which is the innovative thing about it (well together with shield upgrades instead of stealth which is a great idea) as absolutely unnecessary. I would have put R2 on him or even Determination if I was more defensive-minded. I have tried the list with R2 and it gave me better results especially for the time after Biggs goes down. Also even against HSF what does it give you? It assures that he will move before you, which honestly is not that big of a deal for a YT, it might even be a disadvantage if he tries to block you. And it assures that he won't shoot back the turn you kill him, but only if it is Wedge killing him. I really would like to ask James if it did him any good during the whole tournament having veteran instincts and if so, why?
My general question is if it is worth to tailor lists for the current meta, because in a lot of tournament results I see there are lists winning that don't even seem to give current meta a second thought. They are tailored to play to their own strengths, not against something that is supposed to be overpowered at that precise moment. And that's probably the way to go. Be proactive, not destructive in listbuilding.
Back to this game, I think the Imperial player's movement in this game actually was more innovative than the rebel player's, but Frog squadron still is beast especially if you roll good defense on old Biggs. In the end it was the alpha strike that went sour for the imperial player and very good for the rebel and he could just not come back from that turn where he lost all shields on the first BH. Even if there were turns afterwards were he could have made his comeback (when the Rebel just could not kill Howlrunner).
You should play in the Team Covenant Vassal tournament. It would give you a chance to square off against folks like Hothie and Sozin.
Also I need to say that I think the Imperial player's manoeuvring in the last half of the game was awful... He couldn't get favourable shots off half the time and was doing some things I don't think helped him at all.

It is worth noting that the Top 4 matches ended around (if I remember right) 3am. The tournament began at 10am, and there were 2 1-hour breaks. 15 hours is a lot of X-Wing.

Oh yeah for sure I know. I guess is more just aimed at people saying how well they were playing. They both made a lot of mistakes and obviously a large amount of that could be contributed to the time and how long they were playing. I think its still important to note that the rebel player didn't just win because his build was hard to kill, but because his opponent made some crucial mistakes.

Well concerning the imperial player i really think there was not much to do about the game in the video after Howlrunner was gone. He decided to get less shots and more evades if i see it right. Perhaps he could have played more aggressively by focusing or TLing more, or even by K-Turning to meet the X-Wings head on but honestly i think he would only have lost even faster.
