Can Mandy Thompson's Research ability be applied to 'special skill checks' like Evade, Horror, Combat, etc.?

Or can it only be used be used on the basic checks against Speed, Fight, Lore, Luck, etc.?

You may certainly use Mandy's ability on any skill check, which includes the printed variety... Lore , Fight , and Sneak , along with the secondary skills, Spell , Combat , and Evade . Remember, if you use Clue tokens before using her ability, you may roll all of the failed dice, as well. Finally, you may NOT use her ability for such things as Blessings/Curses , as that's NOT a skill check.
