B-Wing Attack Squadron

Haven't decided if I have the guts to do something about the cockpits yet, but I thought this would be fun to try, and they look nice from table height.

Attack of the Killer Bs. I think a couple of them tilted less than 90 degrees would look cool too.

Did you re-set all the stands to those specific angles, or was it you who replaced the plastic socket with square ones (which I recall on a thread from a while ago)?

So jealous you have four already! Still waiting for news from my Aussie supplier on when they are getting them in

A supplier here in QLD is claiming Early Oct before his shipment will be in. Irresistible Force is the name of the store. Located near/in Brisbane. My local is also hoping for that same time period (Bundaberg, QLD). I'm hoping to pick up 3 of each small, and 1-2 of large.

Cheers

I remember seeing the square peg post. I wonder if some hex shape could be better. You maybe couldn't fly them horizontally but if you can set them diagonally a little bit would it bring them down to a one post height without sticking a mile outside of its base?

In the absence of a lot of patience or technical know-how, I basically pulled them apart at the joint where the 'candy cane' peg plugs in between the engines. Then I just rotated two of them sideways and glued it back together. Angled would be trickier but probably doable. I just thought it was kind of funny that on all four pilot cards the B-wing is flying sideways (fun fact: Ibtisam appears to be the only one rotated to a different side than the others), and even though I know up and down is 'attack mode' I thought it was one model where you could add a little variety to the look on the table without a whole lot of effort.

Stealing this idea, Bee-wings vs tie swarm is gonna look like that video of the Japanese Giant Hornets vs Honey Bees

Another interesting thing, the Blue Squadron Pilot is actually upside down. If you look at the cockpit the windshield is on the bottom. I wonder if that's on purpose or someone goofed.

What I wondered, does the back of the cockpit also rotate with the front (the conical bit behind the rings). If so, would it be possible to use a sharp blade to remove both the front and the back leaving just the ring part connected to the ship. Drill through the ring part. drill part way into the front and the back cones, then pin through the whole assembly so the front and back are glued to the pin, but the whole assembly can rotate in the rings.

Looking at the picture I think it's correct, the B-Wing is coming almost directly out of the planet's gravity well.. but I think that the ship is slightly tilted towards the top of the card. which would mean that down.. drawing a line from the center of the craft and the middle of the planet, would orient the cabin that way up. (So yep it would be upside down relative to the card, but the right way up relative to the planet)

The only logical reason for a rotating cockpit on a space-borne platform is to reduce pilot disorientation. Atmospheric piloting already provides many opportunities for disorientation as the pilot loses track of up and down. In space, without a horizon to orient upon, this problem would be enormous.

Modern aircraft use a Horizon line on the HUD to help provide orientation, and I imagine Star Wars fighters would do the same. Having up/down remain relatively stable would be quite an asset in combat, though whether that would be worth the added mechanical complexity is debatable.

That's true, I mean if you think about them as BEING rotated into the 'attack formation' and simply being oriented sideways purely relative to some of their wingmen, as would logically happen in a dogfight in space, there's really no need to change the cockpits. Ten seconds in, everyone would be oriented all over the place anyway.

The gate is down.

Stay out of this, Wiggins.

As I don't have the B-Wings I ordered in front of me yet, how viable is a squad of four B-wings from an in-game performance stance?

I'll let you know!

Probably not SUPER viable. There are some great squad lists I've seen with 2 Blues or Daggers with HLC and Fire Control or Advanced Sensors - that's a great base. Four of the cheapest come out to 88pts, which means you get eh Laser Cannon between the four of them. You can give them some upgrades, with I suspect without some harder to hit targets or that extra range 3 punch they're a bit vulnerable. They should do some damage in close, but the great thing about a B-Wing with an HLC is that he's rolling 4 dice on you all day long. There is no safe range except "completely out of."

Oh, and the A-wings photo-bombing my B-Wing shoot are an in-progress Prototype/Ace paint job and obviously a Green Squadron.
