Two quick character home brews, revolving around Day/Night.

By player1643110, in Talisman Home Brews

I wanted to make characters based around the Day/Night cycle, while possessing abilities that are more unique to the rules. I'm sure they're not as balanced as they ought to be, so if you have any feedback that'd be great.

Also, the images ended up being larger than I would have liked, and thus I'm not going to embed them into this post.

These are interesting! I'm not sure if the price for Dark Wanderer is too high, to turn day to night. Perhaps only 2 Fate?

With the Golden/Dawn fellow, now that is rather tricky, but again I wonder if the price to make Night turn to Day is too high.

At any rate, my opinion is only mine. I would certainly play these characters, if they were in a game. Like the graphics too.

(I thought I was the only person who knew about the Monkey King! - kidding, just didn't expect that presence in Talisman - Ole' !!!)

Thanks for the feedback!

My thoughts regarding the prices of the abilities; I agree that the prices might seem a little high.

King of the Golden Dawn

I was concerned about making the ability to flip the time card to Day too cheap, because while it does help all the other players out, it also allows you to avoid a lot of the nasty Lunar Event cards (if you're playing with Blood Moon expansion), as well as weakens all the enemies you run across. Effectively making him a Strength 4, Craft 4 character as far as combat is concerned.

Perhaps though, the price shouldn't be tied to his health, instead it should cost him 1 Fate. This allows him to have a clutch 1 point heal when needed (if it's Night). This extra health could also be turned into a re-roll, and if he's lucky, retained. That said though, he'd have to gain another Fate before it could be used again. Hmm, this might be the better design.

Dark Wanderer

The price does seem high, but if he uses his ability during the Day, it gives an enemy an effective +2 to their attack roll, in addition to giving him a Fate point (which he could use to re-roll their attack if low). The way I see it, that ability allows him to really put pressure on all other characters (the Night bonus is cancelled out against him due to +1 attack at Night), and when needed, a particular character. Say, if they were at 1 life and thought they could take this "easy" monster.

I wanted the character to have to consider the balance of how much Fate he wanted to reserve to help himself versus how much he wanted to use to try and combat other characters outside his turn. Maybe though, the price should be lowered to 2 Fate... I can foresee him going through his Fate very quickly either way. And since he's not Evil, he won't be able to just replenish all his Fate back at the Graveyard easily.

Would it be possible to get your feedback on another character I just made? This character's concept is a bit different then most, and as a result, I'm concerned it might be too strong, or just too much.

Occultist

The concept was a character based around finding and throwing yourself at the strongest enemies you can, and losing to gain rewards. He starts with a follower that allows him to survive death and restart at the Graveyard, but while he possess the follower he cannot actually win fights against enemies (though he can against players). In addition, when he does decide to ditch the follower (or has him stolen by magic), he becomes extremely vulnerable, having only 1 health until he finds a way to heal.

Originally, there was no follower, the Dark Entity was but rules on his card that he could choose to stop abiding by at the start of his turn, losing the benefits but also the penalties for the rest of the game. I turned it in to a follower though for more counter play, and so that other characters could choose to take up the Dark Entity and join the fun once he ditched the follower.

I had a chance to look at the Occultist and I am impressed with the idea of using losing to gain advantages. The Dark Entity as 'forced' Follower is very cool. In some ways, it is closer to being an undead, than being the Vampiress (who I like as a character, btw).

In essence, this character, along with the Follower, allows you to never die, and gain strength in the process.

I wonder what kind of other 'enforced' Followers could be created, for other new characters or concepts? Could there a similar situation, but for a good type character?

Hope you like my feedback.

I very much like the dark wanderer character, but in my opinion the king of the golden dawn gains lives far too easily! And the occultist never dies and gains more from losing than any character does from winning? I think that would seem quite unfair to other players.
