How often to play?

By craftomega, in Dark Heresy

I have noticed that most groups seem to be once every 2 weeks up to once every 1 month. And to me that seems to be far too little. I forget things after a week and the story becomes less important.

But that could just be me and probably a few others. So I ask why do groups get together so rarely? I can understand if the Gm is busy and writing whole new stories? If that is not the case why not once a week or more?

My most recent group is doing 3, 4 hours games a week and I love it! I have never had so much fun RPing. But once again that could just be my group.

TL:DR Why do groups get together so rarely?

Life.. don't talk to me about life

I can only guess a question like this could be asked by someone who is not married. :P

Pretty much the consistancy of a group is based on the conflic of life events for the members. In HS I could get three or more games in a week, in college, two or three... now that I work full time and have a family of my own... once a week. half of my group is just south of 40, so we have a lot of life that gets in the way, but have managed to keep the group strong for 9 months now, with the acceptance that a few holiday week just have to get cancelled because everyone will be out of town.

Wives typically frown upon you spending more time roleplaying than spending it with them.

For some it might be they need time to write a story... as the main GM I can say it varries between next day and three for me to write another session worth of story. So I doubt that every other week has anything to do with the GM coming up with a story.

I usually play once every other week. That's about the most frequent that our group can manage, since we have to juggle the schedules of seven different people, six of whom have full-time jobs, two of whom are married with children, three of whom are in a band, and then there is this elusive thing called a 'social life'...

The most common I know is once a week, and honestly, I'd love to play much more often. The problem is, as always, real life.

I wish I had a real-life group that all lived in the same area. I have the feeling that that would make it easier meeting up after work twice a week or whatever, but c'est la vie.

I'm afraid it will not work , if at least the GM is working full time. In my current group, player who lives farther than others lives in a twenty minute walk - but it don't work...

.

I play 1 or 2 times a week, alternating, over two group. One goes once a week, the other is every other week. That's plenty often for me without getting burned out. There was a time when I was juggling 3 groups, with a 3 sessions-2 sessions weekly alternation. That got mind numbing.

In my experience, live groups don't meet up any more often once you have players that are done with college; or married w/ kids.

I have two groups, we play once a week for like 4 to 6 hours a week

We aim for once every other week. That's all we can fit into our schedules.

Plus we use a couple of weekends a year for gaming; 2-4 days in a row where we play for 12-14 hours a day.

We are currently gaming once per month but I try to keep a journal that they can refer to for past history and events.

Edit: and the reason is behind us not gaming more often is, well, life. :)

Well said!

I started writing campaign blogs years ago; good way to keep records of what has happened and share stuff with players in between sessions.
