Ships on sprue

By Qapla187, in X-Wing

I'm just curious if anyone else would like to see the ships made available to purchase like a regular model. I've not heard of it, but coming from a 40K background I think it'd be fun to assemble and paint them. Perhaps if enough people show interest FFG may do it at some point? I know it would make supply less of an issue by cutting out the painting factory process. They may even be cheaper for us consumers for the same reason.

So what do you guys think?

I would buy them, but my impression is that the prepainted models are a huge draw for this game for most people. I guess there's something to be said for expansions that are playable right out of the box.

My feeling is that the potential increased sales for FFG wouldn't be enough to offset the issue of adding even more SKUs to the line, especially since the models seem to be flying off the shelves.

Most games that I play have miniatures that require assembly/painting. So after 33 years of gaming experience, I actually enjoy for once not having a modelling/painting projects before I'm ready to game.

Same here. I am very happy that these are ready to go out of the box. FFG Sales to people who do not game, but love the models, and they knew there would be a part of their sales that come from these Star Wars fans...smart.

I too have been playing for several years. I agree with DoubleNot7.

One of (biggy but not the only) the reasons I got into this game are the miniatures. The are a very nice quality and the painting is awesome for the price. But if assembly and painting was required for this game I would have never gotten into it.

I don't mind if people strip and repaint. I don't mind people customize. I might even ask someone (read pay someone) to paint or customize a model for me.

But please keep the high quality, excellent painting, very detailed miniatures coming. For example, I expect people that have no intention of ever playing will buy the Tantive IV when it comes out. Just look at how the Hasbro Blockade Runner sells on Amazon or eBay; now a highly detailed, high quality playable miniature comes out... I'm in!

P.S. I have a Hasbro Blockade Runner - Anyone want to buy it?

I agree. Im all for building/painting models, especially since this game doesnt even come close to the model count other war games do, but I would be much less interested if FFG went that route with X-Wing. The models are great as-is and very detailed. Is also nice to be able to show up at a store and say "I think I'll get another XYZ" and be able to use it immediately.

I don't think FFG will go to normal models, unless the larger ones end up being too large or something to be packaged otherwise. Even then, I'd expect a more "some assembly required" approach as opposed to full-on modeling. Remember that this game is meant to be sold at multiple outliets like Target or B&N. If they went to normal models, those locations would likely no longer carry it. You can't sell detailed models that you have to build/paint in the Toy/Game section very easily after all.

I'm a big fan of this game being pre-painted as I already play several games with a significant model and terrain painting requirement and would be less likely to invest heavily in this game if it weren't pre-painted. I'm also in agreement with the OP in that it would be nice to have the models made available unpainted. Mainly for the modelers who want to do wreckage, custom paint scheme or kit-bash to get the uglies on the table.

Bottom line - I don't believe the two products are mutually exclusive.

I plan on stripping down and repainting a lot of my minis for x-wing but I personally still really appreciate that they come the way they do. Its not to have the option and be able to take my time and wait before putting the paint job I want. And really it just takes a small amount of effort to strip them.

Whoops! I just meant in addition to the normal pre-painted ships. Maybe something you'd order direct from FFG, say for instance you want to paint a custom Firespray. Plus I think it'd be fun to assemble some of the ships (and get rid of those nasty mold lines and sprue cuts).

I completely agree with you guys, if this wasn't such a high quality game I'd never get into it like that other horrible attempt at Star Wars ship game. Wonky wings and gun barrels and even some of the capital ships all looking like they came outta a black hole. And let's not even get started on scale (or lack thereof).

I could see that might be something they could look into. Having unpainted and unassembled ships on the shelfs might not sell well. But having them as special orders could. Then they'd wouldn't have to do any repackaging with new artwork and such...

No kids? When the new ships come out, my current CR-90 will move to my son's collection. He already has the Star Destroyer. My Hallmark Imperial Shuttle will also join his collection. Although the ornament plays the Imperial march, FFG fell short here...

I asked about this at the May 4th event. A raw and unassembled version of the ships that we could paint an assemble ourselves. They sounded like they had not considered it before, but would in the future. I strongly suspect it won't be examined seriously until they get a better handle on the near uncontrollable demand they are dealing with currently.

There is also the chance that their license would not allow it. I spoke with Steve Horvath and he mentioned that the B-Wing had to have the post on the back and it couldn't be removable (to be rotatable for example) since with the post it was a "game piece" without the post it was a "toy". They have the game license, not the toy license. Weirdness of the all the different companies producing different star wars products in different product areas. It may end up that raw pieces and parts are considered "models" and not allowable under their license.

It's all conjecture until they announce a product in any case.

Oh yeah, Doh... now I'm embarrassed; though they are grand kids actually. My kids are out of the toy phase.

I'd rather see them provide an assortment of tokens and post segments for us clumbsy folks who have broken some posts and/or misplaced tokens. I love that these are prepainted and fully assembled as a burned out ex-40K player.

If you could purchase unpainted and unassembled game pieces it could be a boon for the financially endowed. Presumably, without all the paint and maybe even a little glue the prices would be far lower than what you'd normally pay for a ship. Even if you'd get one without all the other pieces in the expansion packs I'm guessing that a number of people would like a few more ships which they could then use the additional cards from the official expansion pack to finish up a squad.
