Suns of Fortune - Now this!

By Jegergryte, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Not to say you can't make both types of humans from the single stat block, but then they are only different by your numbers allocation, this way they are different natively. Finally just by saying your playing a Corellian versus a Human I can make certain assumptions about your character.

That is the problem I have variant humans, they lead to stereotypes. I prefer my races to steer away from "skill bonuses" unless it is generated by something physical and inherent to the race. If the Corellian plumber, shop clerk, and rugby player-equivalent would all share the bonus then I would be happy, but if it is a skill bonus to piloting or some such that makes very little sense for EVERY Corellian to have.

Not every correlian would have it.. but the truly exceptional ones like player characters would.

Why wouldn't a Corellian plumber be a great pilot, in the EU (and I hate myself for reverting to EU for a discussion) they talk about the Corellians like they all drive fast speeders and have some interesting traffic problems. Sometimes the stereotypes make sense, to use your example if your South African you can automatically be included into the "rugby player" group overseas since it's such an important part of our heritage?

I do understand why you might not like game-mechanic stereotypes though and I completely agree why it might not be best for you game, but in my game I think it will fit right in. I think we can both agree that 1 out of the 3 species in the book being a controversial choice won't damage FFG in anyway.

I don't like stereotypes in gaming or literature. I find it a too easy shortcut, but I am more of a nature than nurture guy when it comes to RPG races. It just grates on me, but to each their own. And I will absolutely be purchasing the book, human variant or no. Hell, I will likely be purchasing them all. Maybe if they add a note about these being "stereotypical corellians" or some such rather than all corellians?

I have already made a human, smuggler, pilot and he was born and raised on Corellia. I did all this using the core rulebook. So, where are the Human species from, that are listed in the core rule book? Answer: They are from whereever you want them to be. The idea of variants is eliminating the creativity that should be done while creating your character. The point is, one of the steps in creating a character is choosing what SPECIES they are, the background, origin and what PLANET they are from is determined by the Player.

Just my 2 cents

I hope MM get this up on their site so I preorder it.

So, in an act of shameless self-promotion that I'm sure will soon become my hallmark, I was recently interviewed by Mark Newbold of Jedinews.co.uk for my contributions on Suns of Fortune. You can read the interview here:

No real new information released as far as book content, but it gives you a peek behind the curtain some.

Thanks for the updates. I'm impressed by the effort put into ensuring that the new material meshes with what's already established. And it's nice to see you are trying to avoid overuse of iconic locations, lest they become overly-familiar. It's good to know FFG are committed to such a quality output and have such dedicated writers.

Also... you're kinda cute :)

That is actually an older photo, but I'll take it! Interesting sidenote to that picture, the hand on my shoulder cropped out? That hand belongs to the late Richard "Admiral Motti" LaParmentier. He and I were both at OmegaCon in Birmingham Alabama as guests back in 2005 (I was invited to do panels on creating your own comic books and had a Fandom Comics booth).

Side, side note, Mark Newbold (the guy interviewing me) and I go way back, when he was running lightsabre.co.uk, an older fan site that primarily focused on doing interviews of cast, crew, and people who work on the EU. Fandom Comics was one of the few fan interviews he did. It's cool to look back on the past 6 years since that first interview and recognize how far along Mark and I have both come.

We appreciate your hard work, Keith. I've always associated FFG with quality (and delays! :) and it looks like the writing for EoE is in safe hands. Can't wait for 'Suns of Fortune'!

I heard that Richard LaParmentier sadly passed earlier this year. :(

am i the only one who got really excited to create a Drall by the name of Rock Et'rac Oon?

Now you're not.
