Maps, Modules, and Map Creation materials

By Maveritchell, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Another adventure from Maveritchell!!! Loved Bendu, Stalitz and Echoes, cannot wait to read this one too (note I still haven't sprung any of these adventures on my players yet (I'm running it sandbox style and keep getting sidetracked), but I definitely plan to).

Mav, is the scale of your maps compatible with the size of the charaktertokens from the beginnerset?

That would be awesome, especially if my playgroup decides to use their characters furtheron!

That really depends on what quality you print at. I design my maps on a 64px grid, which is also at about 100px/inch. I do this because it lets me draw at a pixel scale, which resolves nicely for digital maps. If you print, then, at 100DPI, you'll have maps that are to scale with the tokens.

Most printers, however, are used for photo-type printing and print at 300DPI (or higher). If you do that, obviously you'll end up with much smaller prints of these maps.

Thx for your quick reply. I am using posterazor to create the corresponding posters to your maps.

I am still wondering, how you make these awesome maps.

Do you draw all by yourself or do you have some premade objects which you use to create these maps?

(i am so noobish, i know :)

Mav, I bothered to register here solely to deliver this public thanks.

The work you do on your own time that is generously given to us is impeccable. As a GM I dread blind, mapless gameplay, and your work is now the sole light in the darkness. What you do is high-quality, but most importantly it is selfless, doing your part to give to the community and we ALL owe you a beer. Cheers buddy.

PFElton, thanks very much! That means a lot.

Kotlok, I mention on the first page how I put these together. Basically, I make my own set of premade objects and then assemble the maps in Paint.NET. If you'd like to try the same kind of thing, there are instructions in the first post.

We need more, Mavmeister!

You made all those terrain assets with shading in paint.net? Impressive! I've been looking at purchasing tilesets and similarly manipulating them in pixelmator. Unfortunately, I'm an audio guy so I'm not handy with an image editor.

Sorry! Didn't see your post before. The terrain stuff is not (wholly) original - many of my terrain/natural base textures are sourced from CGTextures (I think I must have wiped out this note when I shortened the first post). You absolutely can make that kind of thing in Paint.NET (and I do some of it - metal and tile textures, primarily), but it's far more efficient to start with pre-photographed sources as texture bases, a habit I've picked up from 3D model work.

In truth, my ground textures are probably the weakest part of my maps, because I spend so little time on them. Because I make (or simply use) tiling textures, the only variability in the ground comes from what's on top of it. Hopefully, this is an area I'll continue to grow in!

No worries, this isn't your full time job!

I have had some luck searching for free tileable textures in google, perhaps that will be useful. I've used them in some of my maps for terrain and I've had some luck, but I have a LONG way to go....

I had to register just to thank you!

Unbelievable work on these. I'm just getting started in this game, and in fact, back to role-playing after a ten year hiatus. Bringing up the next generation of role players who are huge Star Wars and MMO fans. (I had to agree with my son that a module at the store was.. "Oh, like a DLC?" uhh.. yeah, it's like a DLC for the core game. :P )

Well, thank-you, sir for the excellent "DLC" for the game! Am in awe of both your skill and generosity. And thank-goodness FFG isn't like some of the old game companies that would start threatening law suits if you happened to IMPLY your stuff might be used with their game! LOL.

Again, thanks very much, and if I can catch a picture or two of our table top game, I'll send it along. :) Going to have to figure out how to print these out, as we're kickin' it old school!

I'd love to see it! I've done work in "free DLC" (read: modding) for years, and the best part is getting to see other people use it.

Re: Printing, it'll depend on how you want to use the maps that'll probably determine how you print. I've scaled these to print at (about) 100dpi/ppi for battlemat-style scaling, but you can crank it up to 300dpi/ppi if you want to preserve space on your table. My average maps are around 2048^2, which is about 20"x20" at 100dpi or 7"x7" at 100dpi.

I just picked up Force and Destiny and started running some custom games with my group and your maps have been AWESOME!! We are more of a visual group so we like to use maps and miniatures and the resources on your site have been perfect. I display the map on a 32 inch LCD that I laid flat on our game table and have the FF dice app on my iPad displayed on another flat screen so everyone can see the rolls. I can't tell you enough how much we appreciate all the work you have done and I will post a pic once I get approved by the moderator since I just created an account.

Well done to you, and to a wonderful community.

Love all the work you did there. The maps, the NPC generator, all of it. This will really help me in building adventures.

There's just one problem that I've found with your asset packs : I can't open them, as they seem to be damaged (each of them :( ). Same with the two PDFs that are on the "Misc. resources" page. Can you check and maybe re-upload them ?

Robin,

I just doublechecked all of them (each of the four assets packs and both .pdfs), and they all appear to be fine. Are you having any other issues with Dropbox links?

If your issues persist, please feel free to let me know, and I'll throw them up on a different host.

Very cool maps!

i'll grab someone for my campaign. Pretty sure Iziz will be waaaaaaaaaay useful (they are on Onderon, you know... :P )

Another person to register to express thanks.

Can on looking for someway of building maps and found even more. I look forward to reading through some of your adventures for GMing soon.

Now to check out the asset packs.

Thanks

Just downloaded them again today, and they're all fine. I don't know what was wrong the last time... I did it on a different computer this time but I don't see how this would change things. Thanks :)

Impressive. Most impressive. :)

wow you have killed it on this site you still working on it? any chance of adding races to npc generator?

I just ran across this cool, simple mapper the other day and while it's mostly themed for fantasy, it's generic enough that it could be used for our scifi purposes.

It uses flash, but rest assured it's good enough to warrant using flash: http://deepnight.net/tools/tabletop-rpg-map-editor/

Maveritchell, thank you for making those campaigns. I absolutely love them! If you want to run them (this is really to anybody), try using Roll20! I'm trying to start one of the campaigns on there right now. Here is the link to Roll20: https://roll20.net/
