We never field more than one large ship on a side and even more often only 1 large ship per game. Large ships tend to radically change the game and, at least for us, takes a lot of the fun out of it.
Why is that do you think?

Technically they're only medium ships, now. ![]()

Honestly I think it is more a matter of taste. We like the fighter idea. Multiple YT-1300 with 360 degree firing arcs doesn't feel like the same game. When run back and forth along the edge is doesn't seem nearly as challenging (read fun) to play. We've played with a YT-1300 on one side and the Firespray on the other an that can be quite fun. The builds are necessarily different of course; but having more than one on a side would be something we do rarely.
Of course if I played more competitively or in tournaments then I might have to change my line of thinking.
[Edit] - P.S. We tend to play very friendly games and seldom play win at all cost. Because of this we often will try different builds just for fun.

True, haha. Isn't it awesome or should I say Epic as in 'Cinematic Play Campaigns, and Epic Tournaments'

Cool, you prefer the chase and skill it takes to line your enemies up for the kill. Yeah I understand that. The bigger ships add the extra element that alters the field.
Have you guys tried just the Falcon say, being chased by a Tie swarm?

Oddly enough we didn't try an actual swarm until just this past weekend, 6 TIEs (Howlrunner and 5 Academy). We played the mission that came with the Firespray expansion. The second time the swarm just simply over whelmed them.
The side with the bounty were Rebels. 4 ships, X-Wing (Biggs well defended); A-Wing (Tyco with bounty); another X-Wing and one Y-Wing (didn't seem like a lot for 150 points but they had a lot of upgrades). The Imperials had Howrunner with Stealth, 3 Academy with Stealth and 2 Academy bare - (90 points).
Turn one - Biggs dies no Imperial losses
Turn two - other X-Wing dies - 1 Imperial loss (bare TIE)
Turn three - Rebels concede.
Talk about changing the dynamics, it wasn't even a competition.
Whew...bad dice?
Just as a FYI... Here's the max number of ships you can field at one time in a 100 point list, using the cheapest version of each ship. Not saying any of these make a good list, just this max you could put on the table for 100 points.
3x YT-1300
4x X-Wing
4x B-Win
5x Y-Wing
5x A-Wing
6x HWK-290
3x Firespray-31
4x Tie Advanced
5x Tie Interceptor
4x Lambda Shuttle
6x Tie Bomber
8x Tie Fighter
Just realized that my Y-Wing count was off. You can actually use 5 Y's with no upgrades.

No problem
It's good to know what the most you can use is. No reason to buy 5 X-Wings when you can put at most 4 on the table at once.
But like I said, that doesn't make for good lists in some cases. 8 TF's is good, 4 X's works well. 6 HWK-290's I don't think would be quite so good.
Whew...bad dice?
Not really... 2 Dice normal, Howlrunner pushes that to 3 when you're in formation; at close range that is 4 dice per TIE,
For Biggs I had 4 of the 6 TIEs at range one each with 4 (four) attack dice and two with 3 attack dice. That's hard to counter since you use your evade or focus token on the first or second shot and still have 4 more attacks to go.
Or I was just lucky.

I agree with this. Using the large ships (and especially the Falcon) makes the art of maneuver drastically less important, and to me that's a big part of the fun of the game. I love nothing more than darting around in Interceptors, but it's just no fun against the Falcon. I really wish FFG had limited its 360 in some way... losing a die at range 3, I dunno.
That said, I still play with those ships (just ordered a second Firespray, in fact) because variety is good, and I'm not sure if I'll ever really play competitively, but it's nice to play how the "real world" plays. However, if my opponents ever say, "Let's just use fighters this game," I wouldn't argue.
I thought howlrunner let you reroll a dice, not give you an extra one...
She does, but interestingly my son and I made the same mistake. I wonder why that seems to be such a common error?

Because when she lets you reroll some kind of miss many will think it is "just like" rolling an extra die to start with. The theory is partly right but completely ignores those times you wouldn't use the reroll because the initial rolls were good enough.
When it comes to the "maximum number of ships of a given type that could be run at 100 points" for some reason it seems that those with fewer upgrade options will typically to better. Now the three Firespray squads may be the biggest exception but most of the ships with fewer than three upgrade options could work at the maximum number. The three YT-build may work with two ORS and Han. I also guess the Rebel Operative only has two upgrades but any ship with just one primary attack die is going to have problems as a swarm ship.

Probably because there's like three other named TIE pilots who all get an extra attack die in various situations. People just sort of transpose that over top of her ability or something.
Nice post from everybody, this is all cool to read because I am still very new to these rules.

I think this makes perfect sense. With some ships you are essentially paying for the options. How many people are taking Y-Wings with no additions? This is also why higher skill pilots (who can take Elite Pilot Skills) are worth more, even if you still have to pay the cost of the upgrades on top!
Cool. Kinda what I was thinking.
I am personally gonna collect Imperial...but need to keep enough of both sides around for the family. Everyone seems interested in playing.
Two more quick questions...
1. I played A LOT of wings of war...the tutorial of this makes it seem quite a bit like WoW....is that the case??
2, I've read a few post that give the impression that the TIE advanced is not very playable...why is this?
Meh. I've got pretty much every plane released in WoG (except Aschoff's Gotha) and a few WoW miniatures (Breugets). I think they play dramatically different. They are two kinds of games, two different mechanics (only sharing a manuever template concept), and two different paces. I love them both.
WoG/WoW has more fog of war with the three round maneuvering. WoG/WoW is diceless, plays longer, requires more cerebral gaming and is a more beautiful and elegant gaming experience. X-wing is fast paced, sometimes "gamey," easy to manage multiple craft, and a "smarter" design overall.
I think having 4 X-wings is a must. To keep it proportional you might as well pick up 8 TIE fighters. The best way to get there is THREE core sets, two TIE expansions and one Xwing expansion. But you can wait on that third core set if you want to begin diversifying. My wave 3's have not come in yet, but I would consider:
x1 Y-Wing
x2 Interceptors
x2 A-Wings
x1 TIE Advanced
Personally, I would wait to pickup any large ships until you had enough variety of smaller fighters to field an effective counter for the larger ships.
Glad to see I was doing it right. That's pretty much exactly what I have minus an A wing. Yay for $12 core sets at Target
$12 Core Sets? ![]()
You absolutely need to pick-up 1 Tie Expansion and 1 X-Wing expansion to open up a variety of new unique pilots for your Core ships. You don't need more than one though as getting 3 ships (and extra dice/templates) in Core is more value for the price. So if I were you ... Get 3 core. That's 4 X-Wings and 7 Ties. Then add other expansions as desired.
$12 Core Sets?
Some Target stores have been found with the Core Sets on clearance for 70% off. Not everywhere, some (like mine - grrr) are still at full price and some have them half off. When you check your local store, make sure to do a price check on the scanner. Some have been found marked full price on the shelf, but scan at a clearance price.
Will do for sure. That is just way too awesome of a price.
That's how I got started 3 cores at 50% off was kicking myself I didn't hold out for the $12 sets until finding out I was lucky to get what I did, and then only because I went to visit pepple in another state. Those discounted sets are starting to aquire friends now.....
Will keep an eye out for Target to put them on sale.
Thank you all for the input. Cannot wait to grab a core set or two and get started.
