New Player - How to get organized?

By Brian2112, in Android: Netrunner The Card Game

I watched a few games at GenCon and heard a lot of good reviews so I decided to purchase Netrunner. Of course I had to get all the expansions to go with it. Now I have lots of cards and I'm not sure of the best way to keep everything organized. I know that all the cards are not being used everytime you play and you have to build a deck for each side. So...

1. Should we stick to the starter box until we get to know the game and then add in expansions?

2. Should I keep all the expansion packs separate? Or do you pile everything together and keep them sorted by runner/corp and then faction and generic cards?

3. Is there a storyline arc with the expansions that you may miss adding them all at once? Or is it like Munchkin and you just dump all the cards in?

Thanks for any suggesions/advice.

1) Yes. Play a couple games with each starter deck. It'll give you a feel for what you would like to change or directions in which to tweak your favorite deck.

2) Pile everything together. I use two binders. A blue one for the Corps and a red one for the Runners. Seperated by Corp I have Identities, Agendas, Assets, Operations, Ice, and Upgrades in that order. For Runners I have again Identities, Events, Hardware, Programs, Resources. And each category is sorted in alphabetic order.

This way I can quickly find a certain card as long as I know what faction and what type to look for.

Example: I'm looking for The Makers Eye. I turn to near the end of my binder, since Shaper is third to last before Neutral, and on the first or second page after my Identities I should be able to find it.

3) I dont think there is a storyline, but I'm not a fluff person.

As far as I know there isn't an ongoing plot such as you see in M:TG, but there is a rich background (the Android universe is really cool).

Use whatever filing system works for you, I tried for a while keeping things arranged by card number (all Core in order, then all Genesis packs in order) but unless you remember which cards came in which datapack it's actually not that helpful. Rhonlore's system if probably much better for being able to find things quickly.

The binders are a good option, but I keep my cards sorted purely by faction and type, and binders can be tedious to rearrange each release, I use the standard "white boxes" that should be available at any card shop. I sort mine by faction, and type, and then sometimes a third variable, for example breakers by type. I generally find it easy to maintain, and still easy enough to find things. I skip dividers, but my neighbors made up some nice ones, and I've seen some websites that have offered printout ones.

All that said, binders are absolutely the best for ease of finding and general browsing. One option to mitigate rearranging is to simply have each datapack be separate. If I had a memory that wasn't swiss cheese, I'd likely go to just such a system.
