07-Sep-13 Tournament Report

By QwartX, in X-Wing Battle Reports

My local league ran it's end of season tournament and here's what I went to bat with, (being a Rebel lover):

  • Wedge Antillies/X-Wing
    • Expose
    • R2-D2
  • "Dutch" Vander/Y-Wing
    • Proton Torpedoes
    • Ion Cannon Turret
  • Biggs Darklighter/X-Wing
    • R2-F2
    • Stealth Device

I normally fly a Falcon, whether Han or Chewie driving but I'd recently been tinkering with the above and thought my skills might be enough to see it through to victory (it does take some planning).

Game 1:

VS:

  • "Dutch" Vander/Y-Wing
    • R2-D2
  • Chewbacca/YT-1300
    • Marksmanship
    • Assault Missiles
    • Gunner
  • Gold Squadron Pilot/Y-Wing

Setup:

His: Chewie dead center flanked by Dutch on his left and GSP right.

Mine: Dutch just to my left of center, Biggs left of that, Wedge left of that.

Turn 1:

We both move up, I keep my guys to 3 forwards to not stress Dutch.

Turn 2:

The rails come off for my opponent. I surge Dutch and Biggs forward. Wedge angles in (3). Biggs turns on R2-F2 for evade to cover Wedge who exposes, Dutch targets the Falcon, and hands a lock to Wedge to lock onto GSP Y-Wing.

My opponent runs the Falcon onto an asteroid, no action, no shot.

The two Y-Wings move up.

Wedge lays a 5 dice roll into GSP, 3 damage

Dutch torpedoes Falcon 2 damage

Biggs shoots the falcon and dodges most of the incoming fire.

Turn 3:

The Falcon collides with Biggs, then Wedge runs into Biggs, this allows a big fat shot on Wedge by the falcon at close range, he survives, not by much. The Falcon is Ion-ed. (This will prove crucial)

Turn 4:

Wedge escapes and Biggs is able to cover him. My Dutch lands the second Ion on the Falcon, which is pointed at the edge.

Turn 5:

Falcon almost goes out, but is still in, pot-shotting as it goes.I worry it may live, Biggs fires on it, my Dutch too. Wedge starts his loop to get back in range. My opponents Y-Wings are facing the wrong direction and Ion-less. He's not able to do anything.

Turn 6:

Falcon swerves, but goes out. Wedge and Biggs kill off GSP. Time runs out and I win 73-0.

Game 2:

VS:

  • Howlrunner/TIE Fighter
    • Stealth Device
  • Alpha Squadron Pilot/TIE Interceptor x3
  • Academy Pilot/TIE Fighter x2

Setup:

Hers: 3 Interceptors in front, centred on map. 3 Fighters in behind, Howlrunner in middle.

Mine: Dutch just to my right of center, Biggs right of that, Wedge right of that.

Turn 1:

We both move up, I keep my guys to 3 forwards to not stress Dutch.

Turn 2:

I bank Dutch and Wedge in. Biggs angles in but hangs back (This will prove very beneficial as Wedge is still covered, but Biggs is at Range 3 from the TIEs and thus gets 5 defence dice. Wedge takes out one Interceptor with an Expose blast at range 1. Dutch takes out another with torpedoes. Wedge takes some damage from TIEs too far away to go after Biggs, I think he's got 1 HP left.

Turn 3:

The TIEs scatter. Wedge peels off to lick his wounds (but forgets to shield up) and Biggs can't follow. Dutch Ions one of the academy TIEs. Biggs does damage to Howlrunner.

Turn 4:

Wedge escapes and goes behind an asteroid but I forget to recharge his shield for the green maneuver a second time. Biggs and Dutch finish Howlrunner off. The ION-ed TIE goes over the asteroid, no damage.

Turn 5 and on:

The order get hazy after this. The formerly ION-ed TIE goes over the asteroid again leaving and still takes no damage. Wedge comes around the asteroid he'd been hiding behind at a 1^, and finally gets one shield back. Biggs goes off after the last interceptor scores a hit. Y-Wing goes after the non-ION-ed TIE so that he and Wedge can work together.

Wedge moves in on the TIE and confident I can end him he exposes (he's got one shield, and 1 hull by this time). He comes close but can't finish him off. The Y-Wing doesn't help as I think Wedge can survive a beating and tries to IONize the Interceptor that has out cornered Biggs and is headed toward the Y-Wing. (I'm trying to win Big to move forward as the next round you must be in the top 2 from this round of 4 games) The TIE gets Wedge.

In the final turn. Biggs comes around and tries to help get the previously ION-ed TIE but fails. The last Interceptor and non-ION-ed TIE finish off Dutch.

Time expires and I lose 58 to 69.

A great day though. My killer went on to win 3rd place taking on a Firespray + Interceptors build. The Winner of the tournament was 8 TIE swarm (I've yet to see it lose in the hands of someone good) and 2nd place was a modification of my list, instead of Dutch, Tycho with PTL and missiles, also substituted was R2-D2 instead of R2-F2 for Bigg's droid. The regeneration can't help you when the swarm climbs all over you.
