Pinder's Repaint Thread

By Pinder, in X-Wing

I generally use Dot 5, from Halfords, in the UK.

Anyone ever use Coke? Just curious, and no I haven't...maybe someone with a broke model could try it.

I used Prestone DOT4 iirc.

er.. which type of Coke.... If it's the drink, I do like a bit of Caffeine... but I don't know how it helps here... If I was cleaning up a murder scene though, I hear it works great on blood stains.... If it's not the drink, I think Brake fluid is cheaper.

what kind of break fluid do people use? Any brands or recommendations?

Prestone is the brand I use, just their basic cheapest one.

I got it at Canadian Tire... not that it helps anyone outside of Canada, sorry!

Awesome that is very helpful! Thanks you. I assume you folks use gloves when you do this?

I don't and have never had any problems with it, though it never hurts to be extra safe.

Thanks for all of the good information Pinder!

Yeah other than the smell and my girlfriend getting all worried about it, I've never had any issues and I haven't used gloves.

It's only poison... what could go wrong... :P

I generally just use tweezers to pick the parts out of the brake fluid and them rinse them off in water before scrubbing them. It shouldn't be a big problem.

Say Pinder have you ever striped any of the softer WizKidz per-painted minis? I have about 20 of them to use as fun little markers for ships with heroes and the like, and man some of these really need to be redone.

These models are not ABS Plastic, and while we have been reading this topic I had a cheap storm trooper in simple green and it is not going to do the job. Do I dare put him into this wonderful brake fluid, only to watch all .99 cents worth of plastic melt...Ha,Ha!

Well.. I think it should work, I've used it on lots of plastics and never had an issue... But my suggestion is try it on something rubbish first... like Elektra.

I would put that ugly little cat girl model in (that I am going to use as a female Tie Pilot) but I paid $4.00 for her. I think I will use my trusty storm trooper again, they guy withstood simple green like a champ, so maybe he will come out of this wonderful brake fluid clean and ready for a good paint job.

Then I can fix up Han and Luke and so on...

;)

For some reason, I am craving candy cane now. :P

Alas it looks like I was beaten to the punch! Haha, but no I've never tried it personally but I would bet that it would work just fine!

What does the back of it look like?

A little later getting this posted than intended, but here is the back of the ship - as well as an updated photo of the front, with appropriate gloss :)

Looks good I have re-painted one of my Firesprays to Krassis Trelix or pretty close anyway.

Can you go into a little more detail on how you did the great weathering?

I will try to put a quick video tutorial together in the next couple days!

Okay!

So here was my project this weekend: building an Emperor's Guard Tie Interceptor!

If your interested in my build process, you can find it here: http://www.starwarsxwing.com/

I will be posting the painted pictures and corresponding blog in the next couple days, cheers!

Looking good, the gloss canopy sets it off. Love the royal guard interceptors, look forward to the tutorial.

I'm using Simple Green on the Firespray and interceptors just now. Used it lots on metal and plastic before with no problem, I'll post how I got on. Never managed any success with brake fluid when I tried, maybe I was using the wrong type.

As per Khyros, Simple Green did nothing, but brake fluid (the cheap stuff from ASDA) stripped the paint in less than a day; electric toothbrush and no damage to the ship itself.

Only downside is that the clear plastic socket for the stand becomes caked in a white frosting/residue, something like dried toothpaste. Easy enough to scrape off the outside, but a bit of a mess on the inside - scraping out with a safety clip has left it scratched. Not a problem for the Firespray where the socket is mostly buried, but more prominient on the interceptors. In hindsight I should have covered them up with blu-tac or tape.

Nice details on your website. Can't wait to see the article on painting.

Delayed, be here are a couple more pictures!

First, the finished RG Interceptor:

You can find the second half of the blog about its construction/painting here:

Also, a repainted 181st - I don't like the blue grey and therefore repainted the entire model.

Ok, so... lots of pictures there. I do hope you enjoyed and would love to hear some feedback as always.

Thanks for checking out the thread!

Cheers,

Pinder

Nice Pinder! Did you use super glue for the winglets on the EG Tie Interceptor?
