The Great Debate #12: Your Favorite Investigator

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I actually don't fancy the first tier 1 investigators that much. Actually, the only tier 1 investigator that I like is Leo. The rest of my favorites besides wilson are leo, dexter, mark and bob. I'm just not that into powerfulness as some of the people here (I'm looking at you frank).

That comment really surprises me. Judging from the custom stuff you've created I would have expected the opposite.

Yes, I like to create powerful stuff, that's no secret. But I still enjoy a good challenge. Btw, I think my custom expansion is pretty balanced (check my sig) as opposed to the random stuff I make.

I won't lie: I enjoy pulling a Rifle more than I enjoy pulling a Tommy Gun. What can I say? I enjoy challenge. It doesn't mean I should make weak/underpowered custom stuff.

Leo's not first tier, he's second tier ;') while he tilts games in your favor, he doesn't often lead to broken games.

Sister Mary. Just lovable and weak.

Eh. She's my most hated character. She should have had rex's ability, only with the blessing instead of the curse.

Our group selects investigators by dealing out two and picking between them. My biggest love, currently, is making every investigator work for me. I'm always a big fan of the underdog. I know that Mandy or Darrell are good, so I'm less inclined to play with them. The "worse" investigators have territory to be explored, and I want to understand all the nuances of the game, and figure out a way to work with whatever I'm dealt.

For instance, just the other night, I had a game that reversed my opinion of Dexter Drake. He's there to assemble spell combos, and have fun with magic, not fight or have encounters. And while fighting and having encounters is ostensibly what you want to do to win this game, a few good spells go a long way towards doing it right. (Dexter + Base set = somewhat boring. In expansions, he becomes much more worth it.) I like him much more after realizing how you should play him, and playing a good game. Sure, he's outclassed by many investigators, but he's got his own niche.

My favorite, at the moment, has to be Mark Harrigan. Not because he's really good, but because his ability is so thoroughly badass. Think of any of the delay encounters. Then think of what Mark would do to bypass that, and tell me he isn't a tank.

Our worst right now is Vincent Lee. Our group has yet to record a win with him. We might have won one before we started recording. But he never seems to be in the right games, and he needs good stuff to get anything done.

Unfortunally Mark suffers from the symptom of having 3 sanity and 3 will, a very hurtful combo. He's still one of my favorite investigators. I also like Dexter.

I like to play with charachters which are weak, fragile and die easily. She shoud have some disabilities like a missing hand or some mental disorder.

Believe me, I know.

for some reason it appears I have a weak spot for investigators with 3 will... wilson, mark, dexter... I don't know why...

Kate, because Science! rules.

Agreed. It is fun. Idea. A fun variant would be starting off 5+ sanity characters with a madness card (save for the amnesia, you'd redraw that one) and 5+ stamina investigators with an injury. 5/5s should start of with a madness. :') Start of the game with some crazy, welcome to Arkham baby!
