The Great Debate #12: Your Favorite Investigator

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Again, favorite, not best.

Mine is non other but:

Great fixed equipment, 2 unique items, unlimited focus, awesome sneak, great speed (with motorcycle), great fight, great luck and he can even cast a spell if he gets one via an encounter. 4$ means two visits to Asylum/Hospital which is nice, only bad part is the Will, which the Whiskey balances a litte (okay, very little, but we're talking favorite, not best). Also an ability that can come in handy sometimes, although I've never gotten to use it not once in over the 30 games I've played with him. By the way, I'm relatively new to these forums so I'm not sure- what tier does Wilson Richard is?

What's yours?

My favorite is Luke, the Dreamer. His back story is great. The idea that I've given up my earthly belongings and live in the Dreamlands is fantastic. Plus I really like the Gate Box as an item.

Mine's Wendy. I like her ninja skills. I'm also a big fan of Darrell. I'm really happy to play almost everybody though.

Hmm... Michael McGlen has always been good to me, though his low sanity occasionally causes trouble. Oddly, Jenny Barnes is also has a really good track record.

On a side note, you've never used Wilson's ability? It's great when you're at the Black Cave or some other place with iffy encounters. Instead of gambling with the cards, just take a dollar.

Technical favorite (most useful): Daisy

Aesthetic favorite (the one I just like for no good reason): Sister Mary

Kate. No question.

Maybe it's just crazy me, but I like having encounters, dangerous or not.

Btw none answered me- what tier is Wilson?

I always enjoy pulling Diana Stanley. Her abilities make good of a bad situation, and it's fun to see Inner Sanctum encounters.

I have a soft spot for Dexter since he's been the first investigator I've ever played.

My favorite female investigator is Sister Mary. I love the character concept and with the clue-marker-to-reroll-for-losing-blessing-houserule, she's also a pretty strong one.

Leo Anderson's my favorite.

I love drawing a random ally at the beginning. He has no real weaknesses, being all-around balanced, and his special ability is very relevant in every game. Not the "best" investigator but certainly my favorite. Wilson and Wendy come in pretty close, too.

I get excited every time I draw Lola Hayes. I'm not sure what it is, but I've really enjoyed every game I played with her.

Bob Jenkins is another favorite. I played him a lot in the last league, and he's got an okay ability, great starting equipment, and that Will is pretty **** useful.

Upper third or lower second, it's arguable (I'd argue third). He's strong and well rounded, but he doesn't have anything that massively shifts the game in the investigators favor, or that gives a major boost to teams all the time (like clue token increasing characters, or Leon Anderson). Top Tier characters are the ones that have powers that are unique and if used correctly can almost guarantee victories.

Darrell Simmons. As a player? Darrel plays really well: speedy, not too bad in a fight, and I love Arkham Encounters. As a character? I've got decades of Peter Parker fandom, not to mention Darrel feels like all those old Hanna-Barbera "sleuth" toons: "I wonder what's in that old place?"

But I'm still waiting for Innsmouth to see if I love Amanda Sharpe's backstory most of all...

Joe Diamond, in every way.

I love his special ability, his starting equitment and his style. Not to forget his power-kill-mode when teaming up with Mandy. Even though it felt wrong, it was kind of an epic moment when we managed to shoot Hastur with a single skill roll.

When he's not available, I tend to choose Dexter or Wendy for reasons I'm not really sure about.... they just feel sympatic.

Amanda Sharpe -- if she can get enough cash to bolster her skills in the early game. Since she draws 3 skills to choose from at the Admin Building, she rarely gets a bum selection. With expanded skills she can be tailored to minimize weaknesses in the rest of the team (plus her 3 focus helps make her very adaptable). The big downside is, of course, that skills are overpriced and it's always a toss up whether to spend/waste cash on skills or go to the shops.

That's funny, I think Lola Hayes is in every way superior to Amanda Sharpe.

She has a much better chance of getting a good skill than having to do random draws.

Lola's downside: She only starts with one (exchangeable) skill, where Amanda has two of them from the start.

Well.... for one thing Amanda is much cuter than Lola (who looks like one of the undead -- though that could just be makeup I suppose) <grin>. The balanced sanity/stamina and extra focus Amanda has vs. Lola tips her in my favor for adaptability. To be honest though, I haven't played Lola much, so my judgement may just be colored by Amanda's good looks. sonrojado.gif

Lola has better starting equipment, 5 more dollars, an extra clue, better stats and a better power. Lola is so much better than Amanda that it's crazy. Or it would be, except that the reason Lola is so much better is that Amanda is extremely terrible as an Investigator.

Lola herself is "pretty decent." Amanda is just the same general idea except terrible.

Poor, poor Amanda.

It's no secret that the new Investigators are supirior to the original ones. It's the same with Carolyn and Daisy.

I don't think ALL the new investigators are superior.

I mean Michael McGlen is far superior to Tony Morgan.

I personally like Tony, even I rarely ever use his abilitys. Don't think McGlens ability too useful either... He's got 7 stamina, is good in fighting and starts with a good weapon... it does need some enemys to take him down, even without his damage redunction. Tony got more Will to prevent getting insane by facing the enemy (a good start if you actually want to kill the monster), has more focus and most of all starts of with 3 Clue tokens, which make him an early gate jumper.

But anyway, let's make this "Most of the new Investigators are superior to the old ones"... as nothing beats a Mandy ;D

You may be right, but Amanda is still the better looker -- and so my favorite! lengua.gif

Upper third.

Wilson himself places handily in my "most broken four person team" but that is because he happens to fit into a very broken strategy extremely well (full group: Kate, Daisy, Mandy, Wilson). But if I was just told to pick "a powerful investigator" and was told that other players would do the same, he wouldn't be my pick. He doesn't have the kind of amazing power that will always improve any investigator team the way Mandy, Leo, or Darrel do.

Still, I've never been disappointed to get him. Wilson is one of the ones I'd class as "Good." Probably more investigators should be his power level, and less of them should be Daisy or Amanda.
