Smarter Ogryns

By Zorblec, in Only War

I have been a fan of the universe for only about 8 to 10 months now but I am a fluff loving guy so I'm pretty good within universe. I do however make my fair share of mistakes so be mindful for any fluff violations I might make below

I recently made a Homebrewed regiment that's theme was it had very close ties with the adeptus mechanicus. its rules are pretty unbalanced and it doesn't tie up with the fluff as well as it should. however I am working on it, but that's a topic for another day. anyways while I was refining the rules for said regiment I thought it might be cool to try to make a strangely smart Ogryn character. Sense the regiment has greater access to cybernetics why not take an Ogryn give him a good quality cerebral implant and splurge some exp on int this could potentially give him a (1+2) to a (2+2) characteristic bonus on intelligence plus an extra degree of success when I pass a test using int

although the chances of this happing in a real game are slim at best the benefits of this are most likely useless and it could be a bit of a fluff violation (although you could compare it with the BONE implant but more advanced) I think it could be a really cool role play thing to do

tell me what you think

That sounds like a fun character to play. Run with it, I'd say.

Incidentally, what rules are you using for the Mechanicus ties? I'd say that well-provisioned and augmetics, plus maybe having a bionic in the standard kit, could do the job pretty well. I am sure there are such regiments in the 40k universe.

What I always figured a 'BONE' type of implant would essentially just give them access to the 'Intelligence' Aptitude, that way you're not having to worry about figuring out +/- anything or extra DoS statistically and the player can spend their xp on increasing that stat or associated skills/talents to the point the Ogryn goes from being a complete idiot, to just being a bit of a cretin.

A BONE implant is supposed to raise an ogryn's intelligence to that of a normal human, or at least "close enough". Having the Intelligence aptitude would suggest that he's in fact more apt in Intelligence-based undertakings than, say, a Sergeant or similar.

And that's just plain ridiculous from a fluff standpoint.

Only War should've had some kind of negative-Aptitude system. That way, it could've been applied to Ogryns, and a BONE would remove it. Just a thought.

I always figured that ogryn player characters were BONE 'eads, or at least partially so; sarcastic jokes aside, asking a player to play a character who's that stupid and childish is often no fun for anyone. There's slapstick comedy and then there's a character you feel should be forced to actually make Linguistics (Low Gothic) checks to talk to the rest of the squad....
