The Hero Championship

By Samwise Gamgee, in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Here's my votes:

AE - Glorfindel

AF - Boromir (T)

AG - Aragorn (Le)

AH - Legolas

AI - Dain Ironfoot

AJ - Denethor

AK - Elrond

AL - Beregond

Thanks joe, Raven... now we just need two more sensible votes for Denethor. :D .come on people! That version of Boromir simply cannot meet his fathers standards yet.

I will be bappy to see Legolas going on to the next round. I guess I really needed to get that antiestablishment vote out of me. He really is the superior card in all respects regardless of how cool Eowyn is.

Oh, and sorry Dain. :) I do expect Sam to avenge Frodo as well. kill that imposter, Elrond! How is Bard a bard when he only carries a one stringed instrument? I call shenanigans!

Always have to vote for the cards I enjoy playing the most! Whenever I have to include Glorfindel (S) or Elrond in a deck, I feel like I have failed as a deckbuilder...

Thanks for voting!! Special thanks to Rainelotr and iznax for commentary!

The count has been updated.

Match-up update:

Sam is still leading Dain though the margin has shrunk to 16-11. However, what is more interesting is that Denethor has put a scoring streak together in his match against his son, Boromir (Le). Denethor went 5-0 before Legolas of Darkwood finally broke the streak with a vote for Boromir (Le).

When asked about the streak, Denethor responded, "I was doing alright before, but when things really took off is when Rainelotr joined the campaign. After he joined in, the votes really started to flow and it put me in the lead. He is a true servant of Gondor and if I emerge triumphant, I may just have to name him a Captain of Gondor in thanks for his service to his Steward."

This is proving to be the closest match of the round. Denethor is barely staying afloat with a lead of 14-13.

Match-up Spotlight:

THE BATTLE OF THE RANGERS

The next closest match-up is between Aragorn (Le) and Faramir. Faramir is currently leading 15-12, but as we saw with Boromir (Le) and Denethor, anything can happen. Let's go down to the field to see what the heroes have to say.

Aragorn, "I am classic. Everyone remembers their affinity for me when they first got the Core Set and brought me out for the quests. Being able to quest and attack/defend was awesome. My stats are equivalent to Faramir's with one enemy in the staging area. Swap Dunedain for Gondor then Ranged for Sentinel, add my sweet readying ability, and add one threat point because of how awesome I am and then boom!! Super-Faramir! And I was here all along..."

After hearing Aragorn's comments, Faramir replied, "What my good ranger from the North is forgetting is that I am a lore ranger and thus have direct access to the coolest thing about being a lore ranger. TRAPS! I might be new to the game, but people have been waiting for my appearance for a long time. Plus, I am looking pretty great in my ranger-looking pose next to the mountain. I have pitched the only shut-out of the contest against Pippin and I slew the Angry Bear. I'm pretty sure I can dispatch you as well."

I vote for the next ones:

Ae: Glorfindel

Aragorn, LO

Aragorn, LE

Legolas

Dain

Boromir

Bard

Beregond

Always have to vote for the cards I enjoy playing the most! Whenever I have to include Glorfindel (S) or Elrond in a deck, I feel like I have failed as a deckbuilder...

Yes, this is a big difference. Of course, Glorfindel or Elrond are super strong, but you have tons of options with them, so they are fun. With the others: Dwarf or Outlands Leaders, you just fill the slots, basically.

Common, please Boromir, you need to pull this out, at least one version of you (although Denethor is seriously cool, too).

If there ever is that tie call again, I am here to call it already: Boromir!

AE - Glorfindel (S). This is going to be a slaughter

AF - Boromir (T). Although this version of Aragorn is superb

AG - Aragorn (Le)

AH - Legolas

AI - Dain Ironfoot

AJ - Denethor

AK - Elrond

AL - Beregond

AE- Glorfindel (S)

AF- Boromir (T)

AG- Aragorn (Le)

AH- Legolas

AI- Dain

AJ- Boromir (Le)

AK- Elrond

AL- Beregond

Look out! Both Dain and Aragorn (Le) are making big comebacks.

AE- Gimli! Of course I know Spirfindel is going to win. But let it be known. I will vote for Gimli until the end!

AF- Aragorn (Lore) Another Lore ranger. Sorry Mr. Tactics Boromir.

AG- Faramir! MORE TRAPS!

AH- Legolas! Sorry Eowyn, but fighting AND progress???

AI- Sam Gamgee! This was an interesting match-up, but I hope to see Dain out of the running.

AJ- Boromir! Go Gondor!

AK- Bard the Bowman! Elrond belongs in Rivendell. Where he does nothing, because he's thousands of years old.

AL- Beregond! Sorry Merry, but don't you belong in Rohan? You've got the Shire. Beregond's got AMAZING defense, abilities, and his art isn't bad either. Go Gondor!

No! Not Dain! Not Leadership Aragorn! NOO!!

VOTE TRAPS. VOTE LORE RANGERS.

Wouldn't you rather just trap a Troll in a couple of Ranger Spikes, and take it down whenever you want? That's the power of traps. And I repeat:

VOTE TRAPS. VOTE LORE RANGERS.

You won't regret it.

AE Glorfindel - "his face fair and young and fearless and full of joy" (Many Meetings, TFotR): the card design and art perfectly capture this noble Noldor warrior who slew a Balrog

AF Aragorn (Lore) - "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost" (Strider, TFotR): again, great design and art for this stealthy, vagabond Ranger

AG Aragorn (Leadership) - a solid hero, though I prefer Strider, but this is more of a downvote for Faramir: I love the character and the art, but not the high-threat design torn between treating him as a warrior and as a ranger

AH Legolas - "we hunted our foes through a day and a night" (The Last Debate, TRotK): again, design and art fit perfectly for the elven representative of the Nine Walkers

AI Sam Gamgee - "I have something to do before the end, and it lies ahead, not in the Shire. I must see it through, sir, if you understand me" (A Short Cut to Mushrooms, TFotR): Sam is tougher than he appears, and this is a great card for the chief hero of the story

AJ Boromir (Leadership) - "no heir of Minas Tirith has for long years been so hardy in toil, so onward into battle, or blown a mightier note on the Great Horn" (Faramir, The Window on the West, TTT): this is a tough choice, because Denthor is a great thematic card, but Boromir, besides having great art, is key for building Gondor decks with strength to withstand the Shadow

AK Elrond - "the house of Elrond was a refuge for the weary and the oppressed, and a treasury of good counsel and wise lore" (Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, The Silmarillion): good card, but more of a downvote for Bard's art, which is too beautiful for the grim-faced captain

AL Beregond - "we have this honour: ever we bear the brunt of the chief hatred of the Dark Lord" (Minas Tirith, TRotK): Merry is good but less thematic, since he was the only hobbit present when he smote the Witch-King, but Beregond perfectly fits Gondor's defence of the West

Sorry for those who checked in when this round was supposed to close. I got hung up, but now it is time.

Another round is coming to a close and it is time for the Elite Eight to be crowned.

However, we have another tie!!! And it is not between Boromir and Denethor, but between Aragorn (Le) and Faramir.

We must therefore go to the tiebreaker. The next vote decides the winner!

The competitors were limited to one word to make their case.

Aragorn said, "KING!!!!"

Faramir replied, "TRAPS!!!!"

Like before, it does not matter if you have voted already.

Ok, here's for more voting!

AM - Aragorn. Must...end...Glorfindel's.....reign!

AN - Leglos. Sorry Farry, voted for you every time this far, but this time I must go with the prince of the woodland realm.

AO - SAM! ALL THE WAY! P.S. BOO to Boromir defeating Denethor.

AP - Beregond of course. Elrond can sail west.

What a round! Let's look at the composition of the Elite Eight.

3 lore, 2 tactics, 2 leadership and only 1 spirit

3 elves (2 Noldor, 1 Silvan), 3 Gondor, 1 Dunedain and 1 Hobbit

6 of the 8 heroes were illustrated by Magali Villenueve.

It's shaping up to be quite the match-up!!!

Thanks to all for voting! Teamjimby snuck the tiebreaker by lleimmoen for Faramir's close win!!

Voting is now open for the Elite Eight (AM-AP)! (Haha.. GrandSpleen beat me to it!)
