How many card protectors?

By DragonWhimsy, in X-Wing

Hey guys, I'm new to the game, in fact I'm getting ready to make my initial purchases. I'm wondering how many card sleeves I'd need of each size to protect all the cards in the core set? And how many I would need per expansion?

Thanks for any help!

For the core set you'll need 13 large protectors for the ship cards, as well as 5 small for the upgrade cards. There are also 33 damage cards. Each expansion has about four or five large cards and about 6 or 7 small ones.

Depends on the set. I think the Interceptor has the most large cards at 6, something like the Firespray or the YT-1300 has the most small cards.

So far for 2 core sets (only sleeving 1 set of damage cards), YT-1300, Firespray, 2 Interceptors, 2 Y-Wings, A Wing, extra X-Wing and Tie Fighter.. I've needed two 50 packs of the small (almost out now) and just started my second 50 pack of the large.

There is a full breakdown here, but it's down at the moment

You could also use the Spreadsheet I've made, put in your purchases and it will tell you the totals for upgrades and ships.. then you just have to add 33 small sleeves per damage pack you want to sleeve.

It's also worth noting that some packs come with extra rules cards (Interceptors, A-Wings, Slave-1 etc). You might want to put them in large sleeves so add a couple extra for that . I have 3 different ones, but I believe that the B-Wing in Wave 3 has one for it's bombs too.

I sleaved my damage cards. I find theyre a lil easier to shuffle that way.

Yeah I would definitely sleeve them, they are likely to get the most wear. I only sleeved one set, the other is in my backup box, in case I need to replace any.

You should get the normal ccg/lcg size sleeves for the big cards and the "yellow pack" for the small cards. Think it's called mini American board game sleeves. Avoid the red package which is slightly bigger and for mini Europe board games :)

Yeah. I got one pack of American Standard, and two packs of American Mini card sleeves coming this week.

It is a must IMO to sleeve all of these cards, and keep any extra bagged in a spare box. For me the art of this wonderful game is as cool as the play time.

-_-

I use Fantasy Flight Games sleeves. The clear sleeves mini american board game size which is 1 5/8 x 2 1/2 in (41 x 63 mm). Those are good for the upgrade cards and the damage cards. They fit nicely. For the regular cards I use again Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars sleeves. Bought two different ones. Here is a picture. One for the Empire and the other for the Rebels.

The short answer is all of them. Once you get into the game you are going to need ALL of the card sleeves.

On a more serious side note, these are my personal favorites:

The FFG ones are 'nicer;' they cost more, are heavier weight, etc, but they're SO stiff and SO slick they don't stack well and will slide around like you were playing on an air hockey table if you're not careful. These are just a little lighter and a little less glossy, are $2.25 retail for 100 of them, and I find them a little easier to play with.

But that's the big thing for me - if I was more worried about protecting the cards, the FFG ones are nice. The ones I linked to, I find, are a nice compromise between play-ability and protection. I like them so much I actually took all of my X-Wing cards OUT of the FFG sleeves (which I'm setting aside to use with Warmachine, since I think they'll be nicer to mark on with a dry-erase) and REsleeving them in the Mayday sleeves.

Total personal preference thing though.

I've gone through about 5 or 6 packs of Greys and about the same for Yellows already...

I've also cut out the maneuvers from some of the expansions (not the Millennium Falcon or Slave I because there is info on the back) and sleeved the maneuver charts for easy reference in game. It helps the new players to be able to predict my moves better because they don't have all the maneuvers memorized, and they make a nice little stack on the side of the play area when they're all tidy and sleeved.

EDIT: I've been meaning to photo copy the Millennium Falcon and Slave I charts, but I have a second copy coming for each of those, so I'll probably sacrifice them to have a nice handy reference in a card sleeve.

There are some really nice versions people have made up that fit in the standard size sleeves

Do these print up clean?

Do you have a clean printer?

;)

Zing!
Those are REALLY nice, by the way. I would have maybe made the maneuver chart just a HAIR bigger so that it was even more visible when those are printed out card size. But a fantastic effort, nonetheless. I picked up the Attack Wing starter recently to check that out, and I had quite a few issues with the quality of all of the components inside - including the cards themselves, which are on a weird heavy linen material that muddies images a bit and bows in the middle like you wouldn't believe.

BUT, the one thing I was very impressed with was the fact that each ship came with a maneuver card just like the ones above, just like what you see printed in each expansion pack but in a nice card-sized, sleeveable format. There were not many things in that box I would ever wish to see FFG emulate, but the maneuver reference cards definitely qualified.

So these are great to have. I do have access to nice heavy card stock and high quality color printing, so I can print and trim those out, sleeve them tonight, and they're going to look great!

I've got the same ones for my pilot cards. Great minds DO think alike. ;)

Thanks guys, that was very helpful, and fast too! :)
