Wave 3 is Shipping! Expected September 13th

By RoosterOnAWire, in X-Wing

Actually the weapons are about even, astromech and system upgrade are roughly equal, Torp options are the same, Turret and cannon upgrades are relatively comparable. The dial and stat line are better for the B-wing but that is balanced by the, what, 6 point difference between their lowest skill pilots.

The baseline 3 Attack vs. 2 is a very big advantage for the B-wing.

I think Advanced Sensors are better than the Astromech slot, too. The R2 Astromech is great on a Y-wing, but mainly because it compensates for the horrible dial. Most of the other astromechs are decidedly meh. R2-D2 is limited by the lack of green, the generic R5 may see more use with more crit-causing options in play these days, and both named R5s continue to be pretty bad. Stacking those up against Advanced Sensors and Sensor Jammer doesn't end well for the Y-wing.

I meant upgrades, attack is obviously something that favors the b-wing.

Fair enough :)

Y-Wings are much tougher than X-Wings or HWKs when it comes to surviving the first pass, and do well even under concentrated fire. The reason is that agility dice are much less useful without a focus token to buff them. If you fire 8 TIEs at range 3 vs. an X-Wing, you will probably kill it (5-6 damage generally), but a Y-Wing will usually survive (6-7 damage).

Now, if you were to take those 8 TIE shots and do them on successive turns (rather than all in one turn) so that the X-Wing has a focus available against each attack, the numbers skew dramatically into the X-Wing's favor. The same holds even more for TIEs, who gain even more by having tokens available for defense.

The myth of the Y-Wing's vulnerability is just that, a myth. Just like the myth of the Y-Wing having a "horrible" dial. It is actually not bad. With a good variety of speeds and maneuvers, its only real disadvantage is that it only has one white turn at speed 2.

JMO, but I think if you play with them a bit you will appreciate their qualities. Trying to fly them like X-Wings won't work, obviously, but that doesn't mean they are weak. The only real complaint I have is the lack of elite pilot skills. There is no real reason for it, at least with Horton and a lesser extent with Dutch, and not making them available is not really explicable besides a misguided attempt by the dev's to create variety between the ships by having some ships lack variety...

Agreed, no elite skills is the biggest knock against them. With a pilot skill of 8, it's a particularly egregious offense against Horton.

Just talked to my FLGS, he said the distributors aren't allowed to ship until Wednesday next week. It also sounded like most of the stock is already sold, similar to what was earlier posted a page or two back. So glad I preordered.

I don't think the bad maneuverability is such a myth. There are two other serious issues which hamper the Y-wing's dial, besides the limited turn options. IMHO the biggest problem dial is that your only greens are on straight maneuvers. This is a pretty major limitation given the hefty amount of red on the dial, and can be absolutely crippling if you're unlucky enough to end up with stress not of your own free will. This is the main reason I consider an R2 Astromech a standard kit for them. It's cheap at 1 point, and makes a HUGE difference in the maneuverability.

The other problem, which is more minor, is the Ahead 4 being red. That doesn't seem like much, but it has two notable impacts. First, it tends to let faster opponents control the initial point of engagement, because they're faster. But the Y-wing's offense also suffers at long range, because of the weak main guns and range limits of the turrets. Ideally, you want the Y-wings at the head of your formation - closer to get better shots, soak up more damage, and execute a pass to leverage your turret... but that's very hard to do when they're slower than most of the rest of your squadron. Everyone becomes constrained by their bad speed.

Those are legitimate issues, to be sure. Though at only 1 point, I also consider R2 to be standard equipment. Those ships were designed with an astromech in mind, after all.

Still, while I didn't claim the Y-Wing dial is great, it is hardly the clunky mess that people have described it as. I have flown a 5 Grey Squadron group before just to see what it was like, and they did just fine. The more typical 23 point Gold with an Ion Cannon (or 24 pts with R2) has decent maneuverability, and the turret makes it much more capable of utilizing that dial (since it doesn't need to worry about pointing at its targets). Even without it, the Y-Wing is still pretty solid.

The 2 firepower, on the other hand, has always been a real disadvantage. Without a Rebel Howlrunner to buff accuracy, that 2 dice has always underwhelmed.

As for the original comparison to the HWK, I think the two are appropriately costed vs. each other (though I think the Y-Wing should only be about 16 points not 18). The generic HWK is not as survivable as the Y-Wing, and has a slightly inferior dial, but costs 2 fewer points and has better access to upgrades. That seems about right to me.

As I suspected. The street date really is the 13th, but they can ship a day or two before. I was wondering why I got my Wave 2 by parcel the day of its "release."

Meeplemart just put up reserve orders with the ship/release date as sept 11th.

Nice, just reserved some :) I was looking at thecultofthenew.com, which also takes preorders, but meeplemart is down the street...

Nice. I'll be popping in tomorrow to pick up my orders and grab a case, some sleeves, and another Tie/Ln. It really is a wondrous place to behold. I wish it was just down street, but a trip on the subway isn't so bad.

I pre-ordered from Miniature Market in the middle of august. The wait's been driving me bonkers, as have the constant date changes.

Once these are in stores I'll be much happier.

I ordered from MiniMarket back in June. If my order switches to Shipped I'll be posting a Mini Market Wave 3 Shipping thread if one isn't up already.

Not that its a competition but i ordered from MM on May 11. I got freaked out when i saw the available numbers dropping so fast and ordered immediately. Of course then the numbers went back up and down a hundred time since then. Jokes on me i guess. The point is I hope to be one of the first shipped out as a result of my over eaggerness and will likewise start a Mini Market shipping thread if i see it ship

Same here.

My going theory (and hope) is that the earliest pre-orders ship first.

My FLGS owner is expecting his to be in-store by Friday, so I'll pick up the rest of mine then. I did order a B-Wing for a friend across the country from Miniature Market and got an email from them this morning stating it had shipped today.

Min Market shipped

To the 2 who posted above this, When did you order? And did you get free shipping or did you pay for it (Emrico i know you paid for shipping with the 1 ship)? Just curious on how the priority of preorder works

Ordered late July, paid for shipping.

I ordered on May 11 at Miniatures Market, did not receive a ship notice.

Interesting. I ordered early May and got shipping notification a few hours after you. But i had enough for free shipping which also means I'll be waiting a little longer for mine (UPS ground is a joke). I guess i don't really know how they prioritze shipping then. Don't matter. A few hours doesn't make a difference much either way
