Has anyone homebrewed some AT-AT unit games?

By sneakyninja, in X-Wing

I've just recently started to play Star Wars X-Wing and I got to thinking about all the different possible home brew possibilities of Planet surface battles.

My favorite ideas that I hope to start tinkering with soon are a Hoth battle where an AT-AT and AT-ST walkers approach a goal line with a shield generator or Ion Cannon token from TESB. When they are within range they can attack and destroy it. A combined campaign could incorporate the first leg as the imperials taking out the ion cannon thus allowing for direct reinforcements of imperial ships, then proceed to the shields. The rebels could use any rebel ships and Snowspeeders. Snowspeeders would be cool if they could circle the walkers 3 times to bring one down.

On the flip side of defense the Imperial Walkers could be made to protect a Endor moon shield generator token from ROTJ.

The biggest hitch in these senario ideas is of course the lack of the existence of AT-AT's, AT-ST's and snowspeeders. This next part goes out to Jason Beaudoin and Steven Kimball of Fantasy Flight Games from gencon'13; make it so! You know modeling a AT-AT would be awesome, sans the plastic injection molding pains that would spawn from it. Wave 4, cough, wave 4.

There are some scenarios out already for the Battle of Hoth. I think the one we used was posted at boardgamegeek.

Our was more Hoth in springtime that, LOL. Miniatures of AT-AT and AT-ST are micromachines. Rebel infantry are IG from 40K Epic.

I have the WOTC AT-AT and it would be perfect for this. I also have 4 at-st mini's.

is that out of scale?

just a little incredibly so..

the Action Fleet AT-AT would be in scale I should think.

Yo Sneakyninja!

I too have been intrigued as to the possibilities of using AT-ATs in games of X-Wing - I've posted some thoughts and pics here :)

Which AT-AT and AT-STs are best to get and in scale?

I've been looking at them for a while and have seen several but I don't know which ones are best.

Where is the place to buy?

Micromachines get my vote. I got mine on ebay.

Action Fleet?

Shouldn't they be about 3"?

Yes, they should be about 3". According to http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/All_Terrain_Armored_Transport

, they are 22.5 metres. That's 886 inches. In 1/270th scale, that's 3.25 inches.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walker_(Star_Wars) they have been described as 49 feet in the EU, which 2.17" at X-Wing scale.

If you look up Shadow AT-AT, Wookieepedia claims it's 15.5 meters, which is again, about 2.25" at scale.

So take your pick? I went with the Star Wars Titanium AT-AT and Shadow AT-AT, which are diecast models about 3" tall. You can find them on eBay. I'll try to keep the base thin enough not to throw of the scale.

What's really interesting is that this means ships on 2 pegs are going to be skimming the ground about 50-75' above the surface! Altitude rules would kill the game, so I'm just going to say they need to be that low to line up a shot (I'm totally ignoring dive-bombing tactics).

I agree the Titanium looks probably right...

What about the AT-ST scaling? Which is best.

Yes, mine are the titanium ones. The scale looks good. I'm not sure what the AT-ST are other than MM. They fit well enough though.

I've actually come up with pilot cards, upgrades and rules for the Hoth battle scenario. Playtested it alot and its a heck of alot of fun. The tow cable mechanic I created really captures the feel of the movie.

Free rules? Check out SWXW: Ground Assault

THe problem with X-wing for ground combats is that it uses the flight path system which is perfect for aircraft and even some cumbersome vehicles like AT-ATs, But for other vehicles like AT-ST or infantry units there needs to be a different set of maneuvers. You need to make up crazy maneuvers like reverse T-rolls for flank marches or barrel rolls that pivot in that direction. Also should make overlapping rules for infantry such as close assault or overun for vehicles.

Man, I always think AT-ATs are much bigger than they actually are. I forget that they're only, like, 2 TIE Fighters long.

Or maybe it's just that I think starfighters are much smaller than they actually are.

X-Wings are listed at 12.5 meters. A F/A-18 Hornet is around 18.3 meters. If you're not that familiar with US military aircraft, a Boeing 737 (a narrow-body airliner) is around 30 meters long, with a 28 meter wingspan. TIE/ln fighters are listed as just under 9 meters (slightly taller than they are long, of course). The American M1-series tank has a hull of about 8 meters, overall length with gun tube forward is a bit less than 10 meters.

So really, starfighters aren't very big.

D&D Attack Wing combines air & ground units into the same game using the flight path system. I don't see why X-wing rules can't be expanded similarly to allow air/ground action.

Much bigger speed mismatch.

Top speed of a dragon is what? 50kmh? compared to a ground unit at around 5-10kmh

Top speed of the very fastest ground unit in x-wing (probably the AT-ST) is around 90kmh (most are MUCH slower though - an infantry unit at full charge wont get much over 5-10kmh ), compared to an atmospheric speed of 1000kmh plus for the craft in x-wing

Inspired by TUZ's post, I made this one:
